Hisense also now provides a dedicated Game menu screen when you’re in play mode, from which you can switch to ultra-wide aspect ratios for compatible PC games or adjust the brightness of dark picture areas exclusively, to make hidden enemies easier to spot. We were unable to completely remove the green hue shift that is visible in the graph, but this didn’t impact any actual TV or film content we viewed. The Hisense U7K is the second tier ULED Mini LED TV in the 2023 line-up and implements a 4K LCD VA panel using Mini LED backlighting with 384 separate dimming zones and an advanced local dimming algorithm. Hisense 65U7K review: an enjoyable mid-range Mini LED | What

There’s none of the headline features here, so if a brand-new console is of interest then the Hisense is not optimised for it. You’ll know if a show or film is in Dolby Vision when the logo pops up, and the U7Q is at its best in this mode with less blooming, better colours and black levels. Otherwise, it sits on a sort of ‘half a hoop’ stand that’s made of plastic-covered metal and is mildly interestingly shaped when judged by prevailing standards.More importantly, dark scenes look more consistent and convincing, as their darkest corners suffer with far less obvious grey mistiness, and there’s much less aggressive interference from backlighting halos around stand-out bright objects than there was with the UK’s U8H. Used with IMAX certified 4K HDR content, IMAX Enhanced uses their proprietary digital remastering technology (DMR) to deliver ultra-vivid images.

It’s also great to find this mid-range Mini LED model offering strong support for the latest gaming experiences. Many TV brands, including giants LG, Samsung and Sony, only tend to support either HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, not both. It’s pretty eloquent through the midrange, though, where the balance is best and detail levels are highest.Uniformity is patchy in places and with sports content, where we have pitches that are a more uniform colour and cameras moving over them, DSE is highlighted and more noticeable.

Multi-format HDR support for a stunning picture from all sources
As well as Dolby Vision and Vision IQ, this Hisense 65” TV also offers multi-format HDR – including HDR10+. Motion is decent on the U7K with no obvious issues encountered playing 24fps material which is displayed with the correct pulldown applied, and 50Hz broadcast is also decent with no obvious frame skipping or micro stutters seen. We will have a full review soon and our thoughts on image quality compared to the Hisense are above in the comparison section. Contrasts, for example, are very impressive thanks to the screen’s ability to generate quite deep and very varied black tones - along with the control of backlighting it demonstrates and the clean, detailed white tones it creates, there’s quite a distance between black and white.Although it’s much more restrained than it was on the U8H, the U7K does still suffer with some blooming, despite the best efforts of its Mini LEDs and dimming zones. And this brings us to the contrast performance of the Hisense U7K and in HDR picture modes we measured on/off contrast at 5249:1 with local dimming set to high and 4102:1 with it set to off. It too has a metal frame, and features some very sensibly contoured buttons covering pretty much all aspects of functionality. Audio or video, it doesn’t matter; you can rely on Hisense to take any expensive new tech and democratise it. Edges lose just a little of their rigour, and detail levels take a hit too, but in broad terms the U7K remains a composed and enjoyable watch.

A TV this big with such dynamic pictures deserves to have a potent sound system around to try and seal the cinematic experience deal. Be warned, though, that the U7K’s direct lighting system does lead to the TV sticking out quite a bit further over much of its rear than most of today’s slimline TVs. If you’d rather not, though, it’s supplied with a fairly elaborate ‘hoop’-style metal stand with plastic facing that a) only adds 1kg to the all-in weight, and b) doesn’t require an especially wide surface to sit on. ULED TVs don’t always have Quantum Dot technology – this one does, but it’s not a QLED TV, it’s ULED.Edges can also look a little false with broadcast material with some obvious ringing seen within certain types of content. More so, at any rate, than the fairly bog-standard feet you get with the TV in the US and Australia. The Hisense U7K design is really quite surprising with a neat and tidy look that uses decent materials to give a more expensive feel.
