If you’re looking for a holistic approach to Japanese, do consider getting a comprehensive Japanese textbook as well.Some pass it over because of the "Basic" in the title, but the lessons and information in this book are still extremely detailed and helpful. This is especially useful for beginners who want to easily understand the natural way of speaking Japanese. What's also nice is the book touches on all levels of formality -- formal, casual, and honorific speech -- as well as male vs female speech. What most people I’ve talk to say is that you’ll get the most out of the book once you’ve already learned the most common features of the Japanese language. The appendix is also fantastic, having many pages of charts and information on things like conjugations, counters, trans/intransitive verbs, etc.
