We recently spoke to 2022/23 Young Artist repetiteur Adrian Salinero about his time on the Global Talent Programme. LC: Reconciling all the different versions of ourselves—who you are with your partner, your closest friend, a stranger, your parents—isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes I feel like I’m a vessel holding all of these different versions at once. As we have reached the end of the year, we caught up with tenor Rhydian Jenkins about his year on the Global Talent Programme.Of the characterisation, Meg is probably the most distinctly drawn of the sisters, wanting a simple, domestic life and drawing comfort and a calm release in caring for her husband – a trajectory that most closely follows the original novel – and it is no surprise that she is the most eager to escape the weekend. Played by Evans, there is a softness to Meg but she is never presented as foolish whatever her sisters think of her, capable of arriving at her own rational decision about the life she wants. NN: Maybe, yeah. I wanted to be close. It’s funny—it’s almost like I wasn’t a photographer. It’s like I was just a man. The writers offer eight distinct scenes, some only a minute or two long in which various combinations of the sisters catch-up on their woes ranging from their incredulity at Meg’s marital routines to Amy’s fears about boyfriends and a scene entirely dedicated to Beth opening birthday presents. The contemporary setting works well, giving reason to the slightly scattered nature of the siblings and their waning knowledge of one another, but without a clear end point in mind the tone wavers between angry, profound, comic and melodramatic.

But this is all perfectly pleasant and watchable, because it is primarily a soapy drama, rather than a straightforward split between drama and documentary. From Victoria to The Crown, there appears to be an insatiable appetite for palace-based intrigue and disasters, and Royal Mob has weddings, lavish parties and betrayals, so all the components are there.

When DawnUpshawasked me to write an opera for her students at Bard (New York), I thought it would be nice to have an originally written contemporary libretto specifically tailored for this occasion - perhaps with a few frivolous young girls at the centre of the piece. Caloy explains Mrs. Malvar helped him financially when she offered him a job at the school, where he met Linda Jacinto, who is revealed to be the Linda mentioned by Grace earlier. Grace clarifies that she does not have an affair with Edwin as he is gay, while Love Mae turns out to be Caloy's niece following the results of her DNA test. With the problems resolved, Grace and Caloy reaffirm their love for each other, while the girls apologize to Love Mae and Mrs. Malvar.
