Description

Strategically positioned, urethane-filled Power Holes enable maximum face flex for improved speeds and an expanded sweet spot you can’t miss.

The Wilson Staff D9 irons are designed for distance with a 27-degree 7-iron. If you’re a card-carrying member of the Loft Police, feel free to go apoplectic. The standard 7-piece set starts with a 21-degree 5-iron and ends with a 47-degree gap wedge. These ball speed gains continue with the new ultra-thin face, which Wilson say is the largest and thinnest unsupported face that they have ever produced. It also features a larger sweet spot than in the D7 range to give you more from off-centre hits. I was a little worried before testing these irons that I'd be missing my target to the left due to offset, but I have to say this only came into consideration on the longer irons and was still more than manageable. I think this could broaden the range of appeal to a greater number of players moving into single figure handicappers - they just look forgiving rather than screaming 'anti-slice' - Wilson have got the balance quite nicely here. The D9 hybrids are available in six loft options (17˚, 19˚, 22˚, 25˚, 28˚ and 31˚) with the Mitsubishi Tensei AV Silver shaft and Lamkin Crossline Genesis grip. Shaft weight options include A (55 Series – 61 grams), R (60 Series – 64 grams), and S (70 Series – 77 grams).

Pergande says the MOI drop-off for the Wilson D9 irons is pretty minor and is more than offset by the size of the head and the low CG. I came to the same conclusion with the Titleist T400 : wonderful with a 7 irons at 26deg! The lower 6 iron is 23 deg and more often than not, does not give you more distance. I share Dave Wishon’s opinion: this is marketing and clubmakers sell by designing a super-performant 7 iron. Do not extrapolate your hopes with it though ! Hope is not a strategy. Testing on a launch monitor confirmed my field observation about consistency. Balls speeds, launch angles, spin, and distances were incredibly consistent – something that will help golfers of all abilities. Results also highlighted another factor in the distance boost – lower spin. The lowest-ever CG mentioned above was great for launching the ball, but the low spin affected trajectory height on the 5, 6 and 7 irons. On the plus side, for golfers craving distance, the low spin provided additional run out. From 8 iron down to wedge, ball flight was towering with good stopping power. Conclusion For the D9 range in 2021 Wilson have followed in the footsteps of the likes of Callaway by turning to what they call a 'generative computer design process' to produce their clubs.

Due to the different techniques used in the printing of balls, different jobs may result in different finishes; this may be in the form of a mat or a gloss finish. Both 'pad printing' and 'digital printing' is used on different jobs resulting in slightly different finishes.

PGA Pro Edits

Wilson Staff captured our attention last month with the stellar looking and performing Staff Model CB irons [full review HERE]. Seeing the new D9 irons for the first time I thought to myself, “Looks like they’ve done it again.” But displaying the esteemed W/S shield doesn’t ensure the D9 irons are worthy of sharing the 2021 spotlight. The true test lies in performance. The irons come as standard with a lightweight KBS steel shaft, but there is also an option to add MRC Tensei graphite shafts too if you struggle with generating much club head speed and want to increase launch and distance. Wilson D9 Irons Review Ball speed/face deflection is a leading character in every game improvement iron release we see. And every release has the same co-star: the lowest center of gravity possible. The Wilson Staff D9 irons are no different. Working my way through the bag on the range, two common observations emerged – the D9 irons are long and consistent. Unsurprisingly, when I looked at the lofts of the D9 irons they were super strong. A good example is the 27° D9 7 iron, which is only half a degree from my gamer 6 iron.
