The DX12 mode is poorly optimised and tries to force data through a low number of CPU threads rather than balance operations across multiple cores. These lower-end boards weren't yet available we wrote this, so we'll have wait to see where they land in terms of features and pricing. I, personally, am a coder, so I have multiple IDEs and windows and so on and so forth open and running at any one time, which can be quite taxing on a CPU. We didn't test with lower voltage levels as this result was perfectly stable on our chip and temperatures did not get out of hand with the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. In other words, the AMD chip definitely has an edge, thanks to its plethora of cores and threads, but you'll need to be running software designed take advantage of lots of cores to see much of a real-world benefit.

Until multi-core gaming optimization improves Intel CPU’s will remain at the top of gaming performance due to their better single core performance and the higher frequencies the i7 CPU’s can clock to. Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X Pascal (custom fan curve to eliminate thermal throttling). This is my long overdue review on the Ryzen 7 1700, as an early adopter of Ryzen in July of last summer, I will go over the benefits of this processor and how far AMD has come in terms of competing with Intel and how AMD is a more viable option moving forward. You'll often find him writing while walking on his treadmill desk, surrounded by heaps of consumer tech. You may have noticed that the entry-level Ryzen 7 chip, the Ryzen 7 1700, lacks an "X" at the end of its name, unlike the Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X. The 1700 continues to post impressive performance results in the multi-threaded 3DMark Fire Strike and Time Spy tests. The Witcher 3 is a free-roaming game which can feature heavy interaction from NPCs in densely-populated urban areas, making it ideal for testing CPU performance.

Grand Theft Auto V and its preference for Intel processors shows a slight performance deficit for Ryzen 7 at 4K but the around 2 FPS drop in average frame rates is minor.

Compared to the other Ryzen 7 SKUs, the 1700's 30W reduction in TDP translates closely into the power draw decrease observed. Because even if the Ryzen 7 1700 doesn't blow away Intel's Kaby Lake i7, it gives it some solid competition, which is something no Core i7 has had for a long time. But the pricing gap between them and the hundreds of Socket LGA 1151 boards that work with Intel's Core i7-7700K aren't as drastic as boards for Intel's enthusiast-class X99 platform.

But Intel's "Kaby Lake" chips are better at lightly threaded workloads and 1080p gaming—at least for now. Gaming on the 1700 is pretty good paired with my GTX 1080 Ti but I recently uninstalled games from this PC as it is my work computer. The game includes a built-in benchmark tool and was one of the first available DirectX 12 benchmarks. When we reviewed the Ryzen 7 1800X, we said that that chip seemed to have a lot of things working in its favor.Cinebench is an application which renders a photorealistic 3D scene to benchmark a computer’s rendering performance, on one CPU core, all CPU cores or using the GPU.
