She's 23, straight and curious how gay guys answer the sex issue of who's the top and who's the bottom. Fortunately, before Death can take Peter away from his loved ones, he slips and sprains his ankle, forcing him to take some time off while he recovers. By Fire and Sword // Glory[September 22nd, 2023 | No Remorse Records] — This album has been threatening to make this list for a while now.

The band’s vision—its combination of chunky death metal with a groggy soft side that reminds me so much of late Riverside—is subtle; but it’s evocative and beautiful. I know they’ve been around since the ’90s, y’all, but this is Opeth’s playground no matter how long they’ve been doing it. And he was right, Towers of Gold is a fantastic record that shows what could be happening in power metal if fans of it weren’t so fucking embarrassed to like it. False Light is adventurous, it’s interesting, it’s idiosyncratic, and it’s—even at a too-damned-long 66 minutes—mesmerizing. But it’s that moment at 3:46—”Leave a little room, leave a little room, leave little room, leave it…”—followed by Tom Newby’s fundy pastor impression that left me going “Wait, what? On Fridays we have three shows: the Early Show at 7pm until 8;30pm, the Late Show from 9pm until 10:30pm and the Late Late Show from 11:15pm. After what must have been an absolutely crazy year for them—having toured with Morbid Angel and lost their rented RV in the process—I hope that they’re leaning back and appreciating what they’ve accomplished in the last three years.

I’ve, of course, been screaming about these guys since at least 2015, and I’m happy to see that they continue to release albums that make me look like I am really smart and have great taste. Between this amazing vocal performance from Brittney Slayes, a classic Michael Romeo solo, and the tight composition, I have been stuck on this song all year. And once the album opens up—like reading the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu—it’s difficult to set it down. That we continue to outstrip our previous performance is entirely because of you, our readers, who are so loyal and open to new music that we can claim an Angry Metal Guy Bump™, because when we review stuff, you listen to it. At 53 minutes, I decided, that “The Place Where I Belong” just mars the whole a little too much to put it higher up the list. If you like your death metal to have that old school Florida feel with a healthy dose of the best Sweden has to offer and—wait for it—fretless bass produced in a way different than German bands do it, then The Corruption of Virtue is the death metal record for you.
