Some later issues also include the remix "Sour Sour Times" plus the "To Kill A Dead Man" track (from the film which led to Portishead's record contract and the cover image used on "Dummy").

These questions keep you coming back, trying to puzzle out its intimidating balance between bleakness and blankness. For "Glory Box", most booklets claim Isaac Hayes'"Ikes Rap III" as sample source, but actually it's a sample from "Ikes Rap II" that is used (the same sample Tricky used on "Hell Is Round the Corner").It’s true that Dummy carries echoes of many landmark albums of the preceding years: the wistful narcosis of Mazzy Star and Cocteau Twins, the skeletal hip-hop of Eric B. A few fuzzy sibilants in Wandering Star (last track on side A), as is sometimes the case with last tracks near the centre of the record, but nothing major or out of the ordinary to detract from the quality of the music.

Meanwhile, back in February, band member Adrian Utley told The Quietus that Portishead had finally started work on a new album, their fourth overall and first since 2008’s Third. His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm. I was worried about this being GZ press, as they can be hit or miss, but they must have at least one super good press, because this one got the love. Quotation marks around "Dummy" on label are identical to each other and not of the complementary, '66''99' variety. For 50 minutes, the album sustains a single, all-enveloping mood; its tracklist is a 10-sided die where every roll comes up some variation of despair. For sure a lot of that sibilance is there in the original CD release and I can hear it listening to the album on Spotify etc. A3 samples Weather Report from " Elegant People" courtesy of MCA Music/Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

Their music may sound like the work of a couple of obsessive vinyl connoisseurs, but the irony is that they made most of it themselves. Though the LPs won’t include any additional material (“with the songs remaining exactly as recorded on the original release”), each copy will include a download card of the original album. The metallic rattle at the center of “Sour Times,” an extended Lalo Schifrin sample, might be an alarm clock bouncing across the surface of a trampoline. Barrow’s lickety-split vinyl scratching helps counterbalance the uniformly sluggish tempos, but the real action is in their breakbeats. A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential. In the closing “Glory Box,” on the other hand, she is as incendiary as Utley’s overdriven guitar riffs, and when she sings, “This is the beginning/Of forever and ever, oh,” her sigh feels like a hole torn in the fabric of the universe. Gibbons’ voice is the center of the music; she elevates the recordings from tracks to songs, from mere head-nodders to forlorn lullabies. Once they had their songs engineered on 24-track tape, they’d take the final product and feed it back into their samplers; some material they even pressed onto vinyl dubplates, to manipulate the way a hip-hop producer would cut up breakbeats.

The 10-minute, black-and-white film is not particularly consequential, but it is notable for the way it visually remixes many of the same influences that make the album feel so instantly familiar. The first 1,000 copies of the reissue will be pressed on blue vinyl, with subsequent copies “reverting back to heavyweight black vinyl. In “Mysterons,” the looped snare rolls sound like a steel trap snapping shut and being pried back open in quick succession.Track A5: Contains portions of " Magic Mountain" as performed by Eric Burdon and WAR courtesy of Avenue Records / Polygram Music Publishing. It’s dark, dank, and quintessentially Bristol, mingling a chilling harbor fog with the resin of a thousand spliffs left to burn down in a haze.
