There also exists the San Diego Sneak Preview Cut, which was only shown once at a preview screening and the US Broadcast Cut, which was edited for television broadcast. In the 2007 documentary Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner, there is a reference to director Ridley Scott presenting an eighth version, a nearly four-hour-long "early cut", that was shown only to studio personnel. The following is a timeline of these various versions. Why is "Blade Runner" one of the greatest movies of all time? I could write a lengthy review describing the movie's greatness, but I'll do the movie greater service by listing the reasons: As far as I am aware, subliminal advertising is still illegal in the UK. But not, perhaps, for long. While the names of the abovenamed companies were visible, they appeared so fleetingly as to pass almost unnoticed. This is big business testing the limits. Somehow or other, as it usually does, business will find a way of getting what it wants. And in pursuit of ever higher profit margins, business wants to freely use advertising, delivered in whatever way it decides, to brainwash people and thus control their behaviour. It's only after I watched Blade Runner that I realised just how tech-noir and Sci-Fi indulged the 80's was. Along with the likes of The Terminator, this film was another milestone in film making were we were once again looking into the not-too-distant future, and a possible reality of our own appreciation of technology. The result of course leading to conflict; both morally and technically. In films, attention to detail is the refuge of those who have lost the ability to tell a story. In general, it is the refuge of those who cannot see the wood for the trees. And the more that the focus is on “attention to detail”, then the more will people lose the ability to follow a thread, a basic mental ability (required in storytelling and much more besides). Thus, as people lose their mental faculties, so films (and novels) become weaker and weaker. And it is for these reasons that Blade Runner 2049 is very weak in comparison to the original.

Ridley Scott's Final Cut of the film began a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on October 5, 2007; [22] in Washington, D.C. at the Uptown Theatre on October 26, 2007; Chicago on November 2, 2007; in Toronto on November 9, 2007 at Theatre D Digital's Regent Theatre; Sydney, Australia at the Hayden Orpheum on November 8, 2007; Melbourne, Australia on November 15, 2007 at The Astor Theatre; Brookline at the Coolidge Corner Theater on November 16, 2007 and Austin, Texas on November 18, 2007. We have now had a chance to view the Special Edition release of this film and, as anticipated does contain all the extras previously available on the 2007 5 Disc Blu-ray release only this time on BD. So what I'm about to say may piss off many of the Scott faithful -- even more so, as it's coming from an die hard 'Blade Runner' fan (I count it as my favorite film). Despite my love for Ridley's epic, I have to say that having finally seen the 'Final Cut' (and after so many months of endless hype), this whole business about it being some radically refashioned version is largely hogwash. Even in its zillion different forms that suffered a zillion different alterations (The added/subtracted narration! The lost unicorn scene! The new effects!), Scott's essential vision has remained largely intact throughout. All of the much-buzzed about changes to the various versions of the film are largely cosmetic (or in the case of the narration, merely the removal of annoyances). Despite myth-making to the contrary, has any version of 'Blade Runner' ever been a massively Featurette: "All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cuts" (SD, 30 minutes) - As cool as it is to finally see the workprint, I must say I think I enjoyed this featurette even more. I have seen the original Ridley Scott film many times. As a stand-alone film, the sequel is reasonably entertaining. As a sequel, however, it is entirely predictable. The third platter features three different versions of the film, selectable from the main menu thanks to seamless branching: the original 1982 domestic cut of the film, the 1982 International version, and the subsequent 1992 Director's Cut. There are no additional bonus features, nor any audio commentaries, although Ridley Scott does offer a new introduction to the disc that provides a short bit of insight on the various versions. Blade Runner' has suffered over the years in various tape and disc incarnations. Although I didn't hate the two previous standard-def DVD releases as much as some, Ridley Scott's masterpiece has certainly never received the definitive video release that fans have long been clamoring for. So when Warner announced last year that -- at last -- 'Blade Runner' would be given a full-bore restoration (complete with the original film elements scanned in at 4k archival resolution), it was clearly a call to rejoice.

The insertion of a dream sequence of a unicorn running through a forest at about the 42-minute mark.

Blade Runner: Other Editions

In 1982, I saw 'Blade Runner' in the Cinema and it really is a film that excels on the large screen. Some years on I brought it as VHS tape and have enjoyed watching again numerous times on my TV at home; even on the small screen it holds up really well. Screen Tests: Rachel & Pris (SD, 9 minutes) - Brief screen tests for Nina Axelrod and Stacey Nelkin here, which have been much-discussed by the film's fans. Nelkin was even briefly cast as a "fifth replicant" The two stars are for the disgusting visual quality of the blu ray version of the Final Cut version of the film. The actual film itself is probably worth 4 stars - one of the most influential and stylish (and over-rated), sci-fi film of all times.
