The author eventually decided to move to New York and worked for an advertising agency as a junior copywriter. The North American company would eventually see Patterson become its CEO. While he was working there in 1976, the author saw his debut novel published. The Thomas Berryman Number was initially turned down on the behalf of no less than 31 publishers but went on to win praise and an Edgar Award. The President’s son and daughter are abducted, and Detective Alex Cross is one of the first on the scene. But someone very high-up is using the FBI, Secret Service, and CIA to keep him off the case and in the dark. As Cross delves deeper into the case, his worst fears materialise when he receives a chilling call from his deadliest adversary, the Mastermind. Alex Cross is gravely injured. Only his partner and friend John Sampson can keep him safe . . . and get justice. As two prominent figures are found murdered Alex and his team must pull all their resources together to solve the crime, while also working on other cases at the same time.

It is really helpful to see a chronological listing of the Alex Cross novels. However, the mistakes in both grammar and spelling have casted a cloud of doubt over the writer’s attention to detail. Detective Alex Cross is a family man at heart: nothing matters more to him than his children, his grandmother, and his wife Bree. His love of his family is his anchor, and gives him the strength to confront evil in his work. One man knows this deeply, and uses Alex’s strength as a weapon against him in the most unsettling and unexpected novel of James Patterson’s career. Randall Christopher's wife becomes prime suspect especially when they discover her missing from home, leaving an empty gun case behind. But is this all as it seems? What about the missing valuables?

Alex and FBI agent Ned Mahoney are also helping his wife Bree in her role as chief of detectives and investigating the recent murders and deaths of local girls I feel like I have grown up with Alex and his family, and they all blend in with the story, whilst finding out more about them all. I don’t want to give much away as you just need to delve in and read it!! But I will say, have the tissues at the ready for there is one heartbreaking part to this story. The book was adapted into a film starring Morgan Freeman in 2001. The role of main character Alex Cross was also taken up, played by Tyler Perry in the 2012 film titled Alex Cross. Following the assassination of two highly corrupt politicians by the sniper, Cross is summoned to take charge of the investigation. I wait for new Alex Cross books with a degree of impatience. This one didn't disappoint. There is less of the psychological insight in this one, and more of the dogged police work, but still a great read. Detective Alex Cross is faced with immense pressure and a race against time as two killers unleash chaos in Washington, DC. A highly controversial senator is discovered murdered in his own bed, while elsewhere in the city, a young girl falls victim to a brutal killing. With the weight of solving both cases pressing on him, Cross finds himself confronted with an impossible decision. Also, I have been under the impression that there ARE Cross novels that precede “Along Came a Spider”.The twists don’t stop with the investigation as there are several developments within the extended family. One had me crying and another had me thinking, what a clever move that opens up so many possibilities for future novels. The family dynamic can, at times, be cloying and syrupy but works well in these particular circumstances. I would like to thank NetGalley and the Publishers Random House Uk, Cornerstone for an eARC for an honest review.
