Description

With ‘Greatest Hits’, I was pretty much solely focused on pushing sonic boundaries for us. Making the most ambitious, creative, accomplished collection of music possible. With ‘Intellectual Property’, I wanted to hold physical instruments again. Force myself to write songs like when I was a teenager. Just me and a guitar singing the dumbest shit ever. For most people, including me, we were writing crap when we were 16.” The thing is, if you’re doing it, because it’s fun, and you love it, and all this shit, and it’s like, that’s great. Amazing. Do it, do it if you love it. But like, I get bummed when I see people and they’re doing this because they feel like they have to…? a b c d e Shutler, Ali (May 21, 2021). "Waterparks – 'Greatest Hits' review: the sounds of 2021 on shuffle". NME . Retrieved May 21, 2021. It was the perfect visual metaphor. I made it blue as, especially in the early days of Waterparks, I liked using blue as a metaphor for me.”

Five albums into their career and with hundreds of viral tweets and TikToks behind him, you’d think we’d be getting closer to working Awsten out. But on INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, the 31-year-old unveils a whole new side to his make-up that hadn’t previously been broadcast so openly: religious guilt.

I wanted to create an environment to explore these themes and concepts and issues in. It’s almost like in therapy, you learn compartmentalisation where you can put things in sections or categories. Explore them one at a time rather than feeling overwhelmed.”

But this one, I think a lot of INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY feels very outwardly projecting a lot of internal thoughts. It’s like scoring a movie and you’re watching somebody else’s TV show on the side. Then here are 13 mixes of different Intellectual Property things. Alright, here’s four more. I got a Bad Sun remix on here. Patneaude, Victoria (February 18, 2016). "Singing Story: Waterparks". Music Connection. Archived from the original on March 10, 2016 . Retrieved March 10, 2016. a b Wilkes, Emma (June 17, 2021). "Waterparks: "Anything You Can Do To Cross Creative Streams, The Cooler Your Piece Of Art Is Going To Be" ". Guitar.com . Retrieved January 29, 2022.This album is so accomplished and covers so much and goes so deep that, especially at the end of a song like ‘A Night Out On Earth’, it just feels like that’s the mic drop. That song in particular warrants that moment.”

I think we did talk about how Greatest Hits is kind of like an inside album the last time we spoke; but this one is definitely more outside. Most of Waterparks’ songs I enjoy them outside. I still think Greatest Hits stands out as an album from the discography because it does have that inside feeling to it.

When you’re editing your own artwork, you kind of only want to listen to the actual music because that just makes sense. Kennelty, Greg (June 22, 2018). "Kerrang! Awsten Knight has been wearing the same grey hoodie for eight days straight. If that sounds a little gross, it’s actually not: such is his all-consuming approach to work, he’s been focussing on nothing else but art for over a week. As a result, Waterparks has taken priority over some far less exciting daily habits… But beyond the topic of social media, Knight gets admittedly “introspective” on the record. When asked to discuss the overall lyrical themes and concepts behind INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, he takes a deep breath and delivers a warning: Things might get a little turbulent. Sherman, Maria (December 10, 2015). "Good Charlotte's Second Act: Inside Madden Brothers' Pop-Punk Reawakening". Rolling Stone. Archived from the original on December 15, 2015 . Retrieved March 10, 2016. So on the more vulnerable side of things, are there are any lyrical moments he is particularly proud of? Knight points to ‘Closer’ and ‘A Night Out On Earth’ as good examples. It was. I always let myself get to a point where it’s very, very vulnerable, and every album has its peaks; but I think this time it was more. I let it be more about other people as well. There’s obviously a lot of emotionally deeper, touchy or, sensitive seeming things, but, I think it’s just maybe more well done this time around.
