DEBI GLIORI is the award-winning author and illustrator of many Bloomsbury picture books including the Alfie series, The Trouble with Dragons, Dragon Love Penguin and the bestselling No Matter What. Just cute little foxy touches that make the story that much better, more interesting, and more enjoyable. Unlike some of these other titles, however, Gliori's No Matter What is deliberately vague, when it comes to the gender of both parent and child - no pronouns, other than "you" are used in the text, and the illustrations are inconclusive - meaning that it can be interpreted in a variety of ways: as a mother-son, a mother-daughter, father-son, or father-daughter story, depending. There are so many reasons I love this book, but I have to say, the major reason is this: this book isn’t parent/caregiver/child specific. This delightful tale tells of how Large reassures a grim and grumpy little Small answering all the questions enquiring children ask when feeling unloved or unsure. There is a wonderful wealth of detail in the illustrations (we particularly enjoy counting the chickens) that lends itself nicely to teaching children the names of household items and F, at the age of about one, was happily pointing to stars and the moon upon request. Go, go, pirate boat, Across the salty sea, Raise the anchor, hoist the sail, It's a pirate's life for me.

I would recommend this book for use within a Reception or KS1 classroom as it would be a great tool to help vulnerable children who may be suffering with anxiety to feel more calm and secure in their environment and within themselves.

Picture books that are reassuring can help soothe a child, help them know that they are loved–or should be loved.Thank you to those who mentioned that the most recent versions do not have the final line about the stars. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. The key message behind this simple and beautiful book for small children is that the love a parent feels for a child is constant and never dies, no matter what happens.

I think, this book is a great helper for parents to explain to children, that parents can not love the child less or more or fall out of love with him. When Large asks what's wrong, Small begins interrogating Large (neither character's gender is specified): "If I were a grumpy grizzly bear, would you still love me?The ending was a bit difficult to swallow initially (the life of a star was initially lost on my children), but after reading it hundreds of times (not exaggerating!

With peep-through pages throughout and an irresistibly, squishy shiny rainbow at the end, this is the perfect book to celebrate individuality in an uplifting and accessible way for little ones. Like so many books of its kind, from Guess How Much I Love You to Love You Forever, this is a story meant to reassure young children, to teach them that parental love is unconditional, and won't be withdrawn because they make a mistake, move away, or grow up. So whilst his enthusiastic reception marked this book out as a real perennial favourite, it also marked it out as a book to enjoy at home.Absolutely adored this book, I plan on recommending it and telling all my friends with children about it. Told in endearing rhyming couplets, it's the story of Small, who is feeling insecure and unloved, and his mother, Large, who must reassure Small that she will always love him, no matter what. Those same lines about death in the American version replaced by the question " And if you are far away, love disappears or remains?
