First, wood offcuts (such as wood chips and sawdust) are put into a digester machine, which is essentially a large pressure cooker. They’re mixed with water and a few chemicals before being ‘cooked’. Summer is filled with a ton of fun summer crafts for kids like this toilet paper roll octopus. Join us and our under the sea fun to celebrate this great season.

All our virgin pulp cellulose is sustainably sourced and is FSC® certified. FSC® stands for Forest Stewardship Council® and they are on a mission to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management. They carefully manage forest habitats in a sustainable way – environmentally, economically and socially – to ensure the longevity of supply is in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem. The hot weather makes it a great time to go to the ocean, lake or sea… so why not craft them too with our under the sea toilet paper roll ocean crafts and make it a great educational time. Toilet paper is one of those products we use every day, a necessity in our homes. But you probably never stop to think about how it came about or whether it contains plastic. Below, you can find more information about this household essential. When was toilet paper invented? That is a very basic example, but the beauty of this craft is that you can customise it completely. Need more pen holders? Repeat the process with more empty toilet rolls and create a huddle of pen holders on your cardboard base. If you’re a fan of campfires, this is a great way to use up your unwanted toilet roll tubes. Whip up a few of these DIY fire starters and lighting your fire will be easy as anything. Just put them at the base of your fire, surrounded by twigs and kindling wood, and light! All you’ll need to make these fire starters is newspaper, some empty toilet rolls and the dryer lint from your tumble dryer.

Most companies produce conventional toilet paper from virgin paper pulp, also known as virgin fiber. Some toilet paper companies also use materials like post-consumer recycled content, pre-consumer recycled content, and other alternatives like wheat straw and bamboo toilet paper. Virgin Fiber Current estimates suggest that there are over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans around the world, and it’s expected that the amount of plastic entering the oceans each year will triple by 2040. The boreal forest is home to hundreds of Indigenous groups and precious wildlife and acts as a globally significant carbon sink. The research found that virgin pulp, the main ingredient for tissue, was a major driver of logging in the boreal, accounting for 23% of Canada’s forest product exports.

FSC Mix means that products are made using a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood. Controlled wood is not from certified forests and its production hasn’t been audited. It’s wood that is considered low risk of coming from a particularly harmful source such as an illegal logging operation or from Indigenous lands. However, the risk assessment is a paper-based process that doesn’t involve any inspections. FSC 100% means that all the materials in the product are sourced from forests that have been audited by an independent third party to confirm they are managed according to FSC social and environmental standards. PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemicals that possess water and grease-repelling properties and are used in thousands of consumer products. Known as ' forever chemicals' because they don’t break down in water, they can spread over long distances and are toxic to humans and wildlife, interfering with hormonal, reproductive and immune systems.

Score table

Did you know that at least 14 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean each year? This harmful substance is injuring and killing fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Need to organise your desk? Before you rush out to the shops to splurge on a plastic organiser, consider making your own with a few empty toilet roll tubes. You can paint it any colour you like and make it into any size or shape to fit your desk arrangement. Plus, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing organiser is much better for the environment.
