Description

Atomos and Canon are delighted to be bringing customers a world first for capturing stunning pristine 8K images with such an affordable, capable and compact camera system. This will be a true game changer in content creation. Note: Due to the large number of streaming and social media platforms that accept custom RTMP sources for live streaming, it is not possible to test every available option. Please take a look at our FAQ article that lists the platforms that have been tested so far, and don't hesitate to reach out to our support team if a streaming platform you'd like to use isn't available. https://atomos.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/sections/205529868-Setup-connectivity You can also get rid of all the menu items apart from timecode and audio meters while shooting so you can concentrate on the composition.

If your Ninja V is already powered on, you will be prompted to perform the firmware update when a drive containing new firmware is inserted. With frame-accurate timecode embedded directly into each recording you can accurately edit together multiple video and audio sources effortlessly using automated functions in all popular editing software. SSD STORAGE Big storage. Mini proportionsThe advanced long-range RF system is completely wireless, offering incredible accuracy and stability. Effortlessly synchronise your recordings with multiple camera and sound sources. When it comes to Atomos Ninja V vs Shinobi as a monitor though I’d recommend the Shinobi instead. It’s lighter, has longer battery life, it’s silent and actually offers more monitoring features. More importantly the Shinobi handles exposure correctly while displaying LUTS and it’s peaking and false colour tools look better. The Shinobi is also half the price of the Ninja V.

A point worth highlighting is that if you’re coming to the Ninja V thinking that it will give your camera a huge video quality boost it won’t. If you record from an 8-bit camera, then the footage you’re shooting will be 8-bit, if your camera is limited to 4K 30fps, that will still be the maximum you can record at. Alternatively, if you're shooting some serious projects and need something even bigger, the Atomos Shogun which appears later in this list sports a massive 7-inch screen, perfect for use with the best cinema cameras. The screen itself is rated at 1000 nits so is still very bright. At 1920x 1080 pixels, the screen shows finely detailed images and is far better than any standard camera screen. You may wish to buy an external sunshade for the brightest days, though. Likewise, a full-sized HDMI to micro HDMI cable is also widely available. You can get an official Atomos cable, but from experience I’ve found buy a decent quality alternative rather than the AAtomos branded version, they’re a lot cheaper and tend to be better quality. Yes, there is an increase in file sizes over standard footage recorded internally, but it’s a price worth paying for the boost in quality that you can see. Changing white balance, altering colors, rescuing highlights and shadows are all much easier on ProRes files.

The Flexibility to Suit any Production

Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test.

If the user boots into ProRes RAW recording mode with a YCC SDI Input, the monitoring image may be incorrect. Monitoring and Recording whilst outputting a RAW signal to the Ninja V in ProRes RAW mode will work as expected. And for HDR, Log shooting or anamorphic, it offers far more control and accuracy than you could ever get out of the camera itself. The Ninja V will also support 6K Apple ProRes RAW and it's the only monitor of this size to do so thanks to a deal between Apple and Atomos. Other features include pro-level monitor tools such as waveforms, false colors, HDR monitoring, and LUT support. The main options you need to pay attention to when you start are the video input settings, and these should mirror the options you have selected on the camera.

Included in the codec arsenal is the ability to record video inputs using the10-bit H.265 (HEVC) codec for high quality compressed recordings with small file sizes, which is perfect for the world we now live in, where streaming and sharing online has dramatically increased. The Shinobi’s frame is all plastic so feels much less substantial than the Ninja. This makes the Shinobi a lot lighter at only 196g without a battery. Unlike the Ninja the Shinobi just has 1/4 threaded mounting points top and bottom and this one doesn’t have the locating pin holes. Screens I’ve been using the Ninja V to record in ProRes RAW with my Sony FX3. Having a separate audio input can also be useful with the Ninja as it offers the ability to record more channels of audio with full control in the menus. Most mirrorless cameras record internally using H.264 or H.265 compression. The Ninja V uses higher-quality codecs—your choice of DNxHD or ProRes, with various levels of compression available. With DNxHD, you have the ability to adjust the level of compression; with ProRes you can choose between the LT, HQ, and 422 formats. Atomos recommends that your Ninja V is plugged into mains power before commencing the firmware update.

The FX9 requires the XDCA-FX9 Extension unit and both the FX6 and FX9 require the AtomX SDI module with RAW activation (or the Pro Kit). In terms of capture, virtually any HDMI or SDI source is supported, including cameras from Nikon, Fujifilm, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Z-Cam, Olympus, RED and ARRI. RAW Over HDMI Every detail, meticulously preservedNetwork Record Control is not available when H.265 is selected as the record format when using the AtomX SYNC Module or Atomos CONNECT accessory.
