Description

Many a famous work owes its value — and in any case its renown — to the incorporation of an intricate system of literary allusions. Its clean lines and smooth finish exude sophistication, while the neutral color options allow it to complement a variety of interior styles. The biographical information and his correspondence are interesting, but this fiction of his is ridiculous. After I graduated with a BA in Literature, I put de Sade on my TBR since I had not been exposed to his work. These particular novels did not show husbands that loved their wives rather the few married men written about were into debauchery and incest.

I shall leave aside the special efficacity Duclos had in mind when he spoke of "those books you read with only one hand. At Mister-Seekers Books, we strive to transform every transaction into a delightful journey of discovery. This colection goes a long way in wresting Sade's name away from the pathology that unfortunatly bears his name. Not my cup-of-tea; but it ends with a shocking act of revenge that makes most of the horror books I read seem pretty tame.

Often compared to Cleland's "Fanny Hill" the narrative also celebrates the female protagonist's pluck and resourcefulness in adversity, reminiscent of Becky Thatcher in Thackeray's "Vanity Fair. His influence on some of the greatest minds of the last century—from Baudelaire and Swinburne to Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky and Kafka—is indisputable. Though I must admit my own general deviancy, because some of the scenes were quite well done when the characters were not philsophizing.

As shown us by the New Testament, he is solemn and rather pensive, irritated sometimes, at other times in tears, and always very serious. He would go even further: he would with pleasure see the whole of mankind done away with, to make room for some new invention of Nature. To cite only the nearest rival of Sade (and, as it were, his competitor in the domain of Evil) it is fairly obvious that Laclos is steeped to saturation in a literature — whereof, moreover, he makes the cleverest, the most intelligent use.In my opinion, the book is more a social experiment/philosophical rant of a misunderstood Libertine. That he now and again talks without rhyme or reason, just to see what will happen (when he addresses the fig trees, for instance) In short, that he enjoys himself. Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693) the author of "The Life of a Sensuous Woman" was a Japanese poet and creator of the "floating world" genre of Japanese prose (ukiyo-zōshi). This volume contains Philosophy in the Bedroom, a major novel that presents the clearest summation of his political philosophy; Eugenie de Franval, a novella widely considered to be a masterpiece of eighteenth-century French literature; and the only authentic and complete American edition of his most famous work, Justine.

The next two sections were relatively short, especially the discussion between a Priest and a Dying Man, which is essentially a satirical work. Whatever makes the libertine happy, regardless of consequence, which in his characters translates as cruelty to others. Justine is one of his greatest works, and this book comes with many other little haunting tales to keep you on the edge of your seat. I truly can not tell you which book was better because they in the shallow sense were the same but in the in depth sense they were a mind F.

It seems established that Sade gave a spanking to a whore in Paris: does that fit with a year in jail? Of the few things I appreciate, his analytical chats on homosexuality and the gray areas between sexual activity for sport or propagation – these were strong, however often repeated and over-emphasized. No part of this excerpt may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the publisher. If anyone is ever tempted to read Justine, proceed to the final 5 pages where Justine summarizes the plot.
