Kitty is an interesting heroine. She lives in the household of her wealthy older brother, Erasmus Stokes along with a younger brother, her sister & brother-in-law, and their children. She loves the younger children, but there is a bit of friction in the household. When she learns that her brother has negotiated her marriage to Lord Haywood, she is not happy but rationalizes that things can’t be much worse than her current situation. I found this “arranged marriage” tale to be somewhat different than usual. Lord Haywood is in need of funds to make significant improvements to his estate. So, he instructs his Man of Business to find him a bride with a large dowry. His search finds a wealthy businessman who will offer his sister along with a significant dowry in return for the influence Lord Haywood might offer. An arranged marriage is negotiated and agreed to. What makes this unusual is that the first time Lord Haywood sets eyes on Kitty Stokes is when she walks down the aisle at their wedding. When challenges appear in their individual lives, Philip and Honoria turn to one another for guidance. Now in constant company, the strength of their feelings makes them question whether mere friendship is enough. But even if they decide they might suit, how in the world will they convince Honoria’s father to agree? Daughters of the Gentry Book 2 A Stroke of Good Fortune Marianne Edgewood is perfectly capable of running Brindale Castle, if only the task would be left to her. A centuries-old house of stone is solid, unchanging, whereas people are not to be relied upon. It matters little that a stranger inherited the castle. She must simply find a way to stay.

In the face of such an insulting proposal, Eleanor flees to London where she lands unwittingly in the home of Stratford’s closest friends. Now thrown together constantly, Eleanor can’t help admiring his masterful apologies, never mind how often he must deliver them. Stratford concedes that, against all his predictions, Eleanor has no shortage of determined suitors. I am ever so grateful that Phineas is a good sort of person. Perhaps a little slow and definitely not wise in the ways of wooing women, but I think the blame there falls more to his parents than anything. I am saddened to think that it was so normal not to speak of love or affection for one’s spouse. It seems so tragic to me that so many relationships could have blossomed into more if only affection were given freely. But no matter. What does matter is that Phineas learned some things and grew a lot. I liked his gentlemanly character and desire to do what is right. Despite the arduous journey it took for his film to finally see the light of day, Folman remains positive. He is never more enthusiastic than when talking about his experience working with The Anne Frank Foundation. I listened to the audiobook of this charming marriage of convenience story. Katherine has two choices--marry or be a caregiver of her brother's children. Her brother basically sells her off to Lord Hayworth, who's trying to save his estate with her dowry. These two had quite the journey from marriage of convenience to love. Kitty’s new life, as wife to a viscount in a strange estate, in a strange village, had not had a promising beginning.Philip Townsend is too busy trying to render his estate profitable to worry about managing its rundown house or finding a woman suited to the role of his wife. His beautiful and competent neighbor Honoria would be the logical choice, were it not for the enmity between their fathers that makes such a thing impossible. Despite it being aimed at very young audiences, I’m impressed that Folman refuses to sanitise the film, especially towards the final chapter, which sees Anne and her family betrayed and then sent to the camps. Folman presents Nazi guards almost like giants looming over her small frame. There is very little ambiguity about Anne and her family’s fate. It is this unambiguously strong image relating to Anne’s fate that sits at the centre of the film. He too was frustrated about the amount of time it has taken for the film to be finalised. “If I could have rushed things a little, I would have,” he says, sounding both frustrated and relieved. She is waiting to be loved for the very first time. He is waiting to love her. But someone is going to make sure that never happens.
