I think I'll read this book again in the next few years to revisit his great points on the disciplines of a Godly man. He constantly references scripture throughout the book, to provide examples of men in the Bible living out the disciplines. He is sinning against the God who is present at that moment, against One who continually gives the Spirit. I am so weary of the peculiar therapeutic atmosphere in which we live today that is scared stiff to tell anybody to do anything or to warn anybody of dangerous consequences of failing to take responsibility for his or her life. After the introduction the book that talks about the importance of discipline of godliness author R.

Kent Hughes does a great job of breaking down what it looks like to be a Godly Man and how men can apply these disciplines to our lives. great book for any and every Christian man wanting to serve His God-the practice of godliness-work and discipline-no easy way to success in anything and that holds good in the spiritual/moral realm. There are also Bible reading plans (including M'Cheyne, which I recommend), helpful Proverbs regarding speech, hymns, choruses, and praise Psalms.Went through this book and a few other books with some guys at our church over the last 6 months and this was definitely a favorite in the group.

Hughes definitely has an expansive heart for men in the American church and rightly assesses that the disciplines are some of the primary means by which men can actually start to develop a real spiritual fervor in their lives. I have prayed and read daily since I began this study, and I have grown so much closer to God and the Lord Jesus Christ! His general point is that things aren't easy, and it takes time to accomplish things, and often it is hard just to keep going. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and a visiting professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Spokane, Washington, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren. Originally written in 1991 and revised in 2001, there is the noticeable lack of discussion of internet porn.

The bare-knuckle command is "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. This is a Christian classic that many in my church have read through and used extensively by previous pastors before me. He is very helpful and speaks to you as if you were both sitting down for a cup of coffee at the barista. Kent Hughes’s inspiring and bestselling book Disciplines of a Godly Man ―now updated with fresh references and suggested resources―is filled with godly advice aimed at helping men grow in the disciplines of prayer, integrity, marriage, leadership, worship, purity, and more.

He isn't opposed to TV, just points out that for the most part, it is there just to kill time, and recommends different things to read instead - Scripture and Christian literature. Disciplines is a subject about which the Scriptures say much - but contemporary authors have been peculiarly silent. I recommend reading the book with a friend or a small group like I did, as having others to go along with you helps keep you motivated. The difference between legalism and discipline is one of motivation: legalism is self-centered; discipline is God-centered. The typical disciplines you see (not a negative, they are always written about because they clearly Biblical and obviously important) written about are handled well, but the strength of this books comes from some of the other chapters that tackles things you don't always see, such as friendship and work.

It means granting them the same importance, the same value, the same existential gravity that we take for granted in ourselves. Again, chapters like being involved in church, giving money, and witnessing (evangelism) are typical and as expected.A helpful challenge for me to live up the biblical commands for Christian men across the whole of life. Through a series of short, yet accurate chapters on a variety of areas that pertain to Christian men, Hughes drives home the point that spiritual discipline is a necessary part of the believer's life.
