Weaving the stories of several different couples around their regular dinner party get together is a great idea, and the addition of an extra person into the mix creates an interesting dynamic. I enjoyed the addition of the little bits at the end of each chapter with the journalist questioning the dinner guests.

The tension is build up slowly but steadily in the rest of the story, mixing secrets and twists with moments of action and suspense. I initially had a very good feeling about this story, but as the storyline continued and evolved, I started wondering about the credibility of it all. Sure, there is no doubt that if you are looking for adrenaline and action you will be in for a treat with the second half of The Dinner Party. But I myself found everything that happened to the four couples simply to be a tad too farfetched. I could accept the first thing that happened, the second too if I'm generous... But afterwards things really went out of control and my eyebrows started raising themselves more and more and more. On top of that, I didn't really find the final reveal or explanation behind it all credible at all... Making the ending a bit of a disappointment for me. I did like how we came a full circle and saw the first chapter described again in its proper place in the story though. In this satirical comedy, a handsome stranger inadvertently wreaks havoc in the lives of three couples. Not attending - Dominic, Joe’s Father ( he’s in prison for two months for ‘accidentally’ shooting a cousin while hunting). Sylvia’s ‘hide-away wish’ - from the Rothschild’s family. This book has a good variety of characters involved, and how each person views the same incident differently. And this book is told in different perspectives. So it makes it even more interesting to read. It's not the repetition of the same incidents, but the aftermath that is discussed. The plot is nothing new, bu the take on the plot is really refreshing to read. This is my first Tracy Bloom book, and i am really excited to read other books by her! There are a lot of chapters in Dinner Party. Each chapter is written from one of the group's point of view. We are also treated to an ongoing interview with the individual members by a journalist of some sort at the end of each chapter. Hints are given as the story goes along that chaos has ensued. It takes a bit of reading through to absorb all of the consequences that will occur by simply inviting one extra person to the dinner party.I really enjoyed The Dinner Party, fast paced, twisty as you like, with some love to hate to love characters all up to various levels of nefarious activities. They are a group of eight friends ... all married ... all have been friends for at least 10 years. Ted and Juliette are hosting a dinner party at their house. They are expecting a wonderful evening of fun, good food, laughter, great company, and wine. This is Tracy Bloom at her best - funny, real people, fabulous situations and a hook that kept me intrigued until the end. This book is billed as a ‘LOL Romantic Comedy’ and it passes all 3 descriptions, LOL, Romantic and Conedy To mark the anniversary of a death in the family, Kate meticulously plans a dinner party - from the fancy table setting to the perfect baked alaska waiting in the freezer. But by the end of the night, old tensions have flared, the guests are gone, and Kate is spinning out of control.

The Dinner Party by Brenda Janowitz | Goodreads The Dinner Party by Brenda Janowitz | Goodreads

It was a good read but not excellent. It did grip me at the beginning and I was fully engaged. I started it before going to bed and thought I could just read through some chapters. Instead I read the first quarter in one sitting and had to go to bed because of work and continued the next day.I enjoyed this one. It didn't blow me away or anything, and it was quite far-fetched, but it kept me entertained throughout. 👍 Now grow the kids up a bit, pair them off, and add in seeds of self doubt, marital discontent, and general passive aggressive self loathing. The police finally found Jakob but they said he hung himself on a tree and told them it was a suicide, when the police were examine Jakob’s body they found the date rate drug in his system. But Juliette lied to ted she wasn’t at work she was at Kathryn’s and they were arguing. Four couples who are apparently life long friends get together at one of the couple's houses for one of their regular dinner parties. It all appears to start off ok although even from the beginning the reader gets the feeling that these people are not as close as they pretend to be. There is tension in the air and the atmosphere gets worse after one of the women suggests that they play a game called the truth game. But the humor, which is considerable, and the Jewish references, which are fundamental to the tale, are both secondary to Janowitz’s main goal with the novel.
