This is the first Pixar film to use the 2011 Disney logo until Lightyear; the first non-Pixar film to use it was The Muppets until Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again. Merida • King Fergus • Queen Elinor • Harris, Hubert, and Hamish • Angus • Lord MacGuffin • Lord Macintosh • Lord Dingwall • Mor'du • Maudie • Young MacGuffin • Young Macintosh • Wee Dingwall • Witch • The Crow • Will O' the Wisps • Martin • Gordon • The Ancient King • The Three Brothers • Clan DunBroch • Clan MacGuffin • Clan Macintosh • Clan Dingwall • Conan This is the first Pixar movie to have a female protagonist followed by Inside Out, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, Turning Red, and Elemental. John Ratzenberger, having appeared in every Pixar film to date, was the only American voice actor in Brave; all other voice actors were British. It is not clear from the film where in Scotland or when the film is set. The difficulty in assessing the historical setting stems from a number of anachronisms.Scottish publication The Scotsman asked director Mark Andrews on the notion of a sequel. Andrews said, "I don't know if there will be another one. We never make a film at Pixar to have a sequel. It is always nice when you do, and we kind of have a philosophy that if we find the right story then we will."

This marks the first time a different composer than Randy Newman, Thomas Newman, or Michael Giacchino has composed a music score for a feature-length Pixar film. it is also the first feature-length Pixar film to have its music score composed by a non-recurring composer followed by Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. Although the production of the film started in 2008, Brenda Chapman had already begun work years earlier. As early as in 2006, several members of the crew made a research trip in Scotland. They made two trips to Scotland for the film, visiting the Eilean Donan and Dunnottar Castles, as well as the Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis, which inspired the circle of standing stones that appears in the film. The end credits of the movie include a special tribute to Steve Jobs, who died on October 5, 2011 of pancreatic cancer.Films: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) • Cinderella (1950) • Sleeping Beauty (1959) • The Little Mermaid (1989) • Beauty and the Beast (1991) • Aladdin (1992) • Pocahontas (1995) • Mulan (1998) • The Princess and the Frog (2009) • Tangled (2010) • Brave (2012) • Moana (2016) • Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) Brave's logo include a stylized representation of Merida in the "B" and of Queen Elinor in the "E". Brave is rated PG by the MPAA for some scary action and rude humor, making it the third Pixar film to receive this rating, the first being The Incredibles, the second being Up, the fourth being Inside Out and the fifth being The Good Dinosaur. Originally, Reese Witherspoon was scheduled to voice Merida, but later she was unable to work on the film due to scheduling issues and failing to master a Scottish accent, so she had to leave and was replaced by Kelly Macdonald as a result. A tie-in novel sequel titled Bravely was released in 2022 written by Maggie Stiefvater. The novel was published with Disney's consent and takes place when Merida is in her early 20's.

Tartan was not worn until the early 16th century CE, belted kilts not being common until the end of the century, and single kilts not until the end of the next. Books: Kilala Princess • Disney Princess • Disney Princess Beginnings • Disney Princess Comics Treasury • Royal Weddings As far as the story goes, it was a mixed bag. While I was thrilled to see a Pixar film with female leads AND featuring a mother-daughter relationship, the story itself seemed a bit shallow and flat. It wasn't bad, but never hit that emotional spot within that you'd find in "Up" or "Toy Story 3". Now this isn't to say it's bad---it just isn't among the very best of the studio and is STILL well worth seeing. It's especially nice to see a FEMALE protagonist--and one who does NOT need to be rescued by a prince! Incidentally, my daughter and her friend loved the film--and my bet is that girls would generally prefer this film but it's a lot of fun for everyone. Sofia the First • Disney Fairies • Princesses of Heart • Palace Pets • Princess Academy • Ralph Breaks the Internet • Disney Princess - The Concert • Like a Princess While I must admit that "Brave" is not among my favorite Pixar films, I was totally blown away by the computer graphics. To some extent this is to be expected--as years pass, the CGI is bound to get better and better. But it's more than that--the textures, colors and depth were all incredible and I was in love with the animation throughout. There are more than 100 unique hair/facial hair combinations used in Brave for human characters and animals. Each variant can appear in any of nine different colors, creating more than 900 hairstyle/color variants. This is also Pixar's first fairy tale and their first film to take on the fantasy genre (not really counting Monsters Inc. as it appears takes on more of the science fiction genre than it does fantasy). The Brave Little Toaster (1987) • Valiant (2005) • The Wild (2006) • A Christmas Carol (2009) • Gnomeo & Juliet (2011) • Mars Needs Moms (2011) • Strange Magic (2015) • The Lion King (2019) Other Heroines: Alice • Wendy Darling • Tinker Bell • Nala • Nakoma • Esmeralda • Jane Porter • Giselle • Mirabel Madrigal Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3 out of 4 stars and wrote, "The good news is that the kids will probably love it, and the bad news is that parents will be disappointed if they're hoping for another Pixar groundbreaker." He said that the film had an uplifting message about improving communication between mothers and daughters.
