The country’s criminal code does not outline conflict-based sexual violence, which is separate from other forms of sexual violence and abuse under international law. That means survivors do not receive the same legal status as victims of other types of war crimes, such as unlawful detention, property loss or torture, which come with state financial support. The majority of sexual violence reported so far took place under occupation, in areas such as the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions and Kherson. Police have no access to areas still under Russian control, so they can only wait for Ukraine to make military advances.

Sky News exclusive: Crew witness a ‘conveyer belt of horror

Photograph: ANASTASIA_VLASOVA/The Guardian In some states of Myanmar almost everyone is displaced by the ongoing fighting. Many of those the team spoke to draw parallels with the help to Ukraine, and most have given up hope that help will come. Sky News were shown positions where the bodies of dead Myanmar army soldiers still lie, witnessed the targeting of civilians with air strikes and artillery and met some of the thousands of internally displaced people. When approached with Amnesty International’s findings, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) repeated its denial that any civilians have been killed in its operations in Somalia. The Hidden Wars refers primarily to a series conflicts during the era of the original Star League. The use of the term "hidden" is due to the fact the conflicts were relatively low-level compared to those of the Age of War and Reunification War, and save for the parties directly involved, barely disturbed the general level of peace of the period. In the course of their investigation Amnesty International researchers travelled to Somalia, conducted more than 150 interviews with eyewitnesses, relatives, persons displaced by the fighting, and expert sources – including in the US military – and rigorously analysed corroborating evidence, including satellite imagery, munition fragments, and photos from the aftermath of air strikes. Strikes proliferate after Trump weakens safeguards Maryna survived sexual violence while in prison in Russian-occupied Donetsk, where she was detained for her pro-Ukrainian stance. Her identity has been concealed as her husband – a civilian – is still being held there. Released last year, she filed an official report together with a large group of other detainees. It was not taken on, and she was not told why, but is preparing to file a new case as an individual. Nevertheless, today there were lessons in maths, Ukrainian and English – as well as a visit from a police officer, Oleksandr Polishchuk. Polishchuk gave the nine-year-olds a road-safety talk on using zebra crossings and underpasses. But not before hehad covered a couple of other topics.

US forces carried out 34 strikes in Somalia in the last nine months of 2017 – more than in the entire five years from 2012 to 2016. This increased again in 2018, to 47 strikes; and there have already been 24 in the first two months of 2019 alone. Jonathan Levy, Managing Director and Executive Editor at Sky News said : “ Stuart and the team’s reporting from Myanmar takes audiences inside this brutal and unseen war. The visceral footage gives a rare view of the scale of violence and is a fine example of why Sky News continues to invest in eyewitness journalism and sending our people to where a story is unfolding.” There is martial law at the moment,” he said, “and it’s really important not to ignore air raid sirens. Also, you mustn’t stand next to the windows during an air raid. Do you know why?” Halyna, 61, who did not want to use her full name, reported her case to Ukrainian police shortly after Russian troops retreated from the Kyiv region in spring last year. Fifteen months on, she has had no update on her case and is struggling to move on.

At around 3am an air strike targeted them without warning. The blast sent other farmers scrambling for cover and woke residents of two nearby villages. Villagers who went to recover the bodies at first light described the men’s horrific injuries. People might not consider what happened to them sexual violence until they have had help processing what happened,” said Alona Sychova, a psychologist at UNFPA’s Zaporizhzhia Survivor Relief Centres, one of 11 across the country. The children’s day had begun far from peacefully: just after 5.30am, the air raid sirens sounded and six Russian S300 surface-to-air missiles hit the eastern Ukrainian city.

Based on the evidence presented in our March 2019 report, Amnesty International believes that the explosion was most plausibly caused by a US air strike. The Second Hidden War, also as the War of Davion Succession or First Council War, was fought between the Draconis Combine and the Federated Suns over the question of succession to the throne of the First Prince of the Federated Suns. Human rights lawyers working with Ukraine’s public prosecutor are preparing a war crimes dossier to submit to the international criminal court (ICC) accusing Russia of deliberately causing starvation during the 18-month-long conflict, Dan Sabbagh reports. People go to law enforcement, report a case and expect judgment right away, and punishment for those who harmed them,” said Sychova. “But if it takes a long time, or the case doesn’t go forward as expected – it leads to added frustration and anxiety.” Some may choose not to take the case as far as court due to the trauma of giving repeated detailed testimony.Photos of the three dead farmers and the surrounding area allowed Amnesty International’s Digital Verification Corps to pin down the location of the air strike. Ramsay added : " I knew this was going to be different to many wars that I have covered, not least because it's taking place in a jungle, but I didn't expect it to be so violent, volatile, and affecting so many civilians across the country". In a series of special reports on Sky News this week, Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay will take audiences inside Myanmar, a country torn apart by a civil war that has seen thousands of civilians killed by the military regime who seized power two years ago. Five European companies including a Polish subsidiary of a British multinational are named as the original manufacturers of the identified components. Daniel Boffey reports.
