In September of 1971, Neil Young took Graham Nash out on his lake in a rowboat and blasted his new album, Harvest. He’d wired his Northern California ranch house as the left speaker and a barn as the right speaker; as the record played, his producer, Elliot Mazer, ran down to the shore to ask how it sounded. “More barn!” Young famously yelled. I went on to Nashville at the end of the tour to do the Johnny Cash television show, which was new and really hot at the time. Bob Dylan had just done the first one, and everyone wanted to do it. James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt were doing the second show, and so was I. Everyone loved Johnny Cash; he was the real thing. The show was all about music, and it was cool, very real. While I was there I met Elliot Mazer, the record producer, and we went into the studio to try some studio versions of all my new songs. Tim Drummond was there, and he put together a great band, with Kenny Buttrey, John Harris, Ben Keith, and another guitarist who played some tasty things like the harmonics on "Heart of Gold." This was a great-sounding band. James and Linda came in and added some vocals; James even played banjo on "Old Man." That session was a solid beginning for Harvest. Watching the film is a poignant experience for Young. “Seeing all those guys,” he says today, referring to the Stray Gators, “none of them are alive. So, y’know, that’s a trip. I’m looking at them and I’m the only one left. There’s a great jam in there, somewhere in the middle of the Harvest barn. It’s very cool hearing that. Very funky and spontaneous. I like things like that. I like the idea of getting this film out and having people see the real story – and the fact that I made the film, instead of someone else doing it.” Song I Can’t Wait to Hear Live: “Journey Through the Past” – Young recently expressed his discomfort for touring during the waning pandemic, so it’s anybody’s guess when/if he’ll hit the road again. But him, his guitar and this sadly nostalgic song alone would be enough for me.The Other Shoe Productions, Inc. Under exclusive license to Reprise Records. As we approach the holidays, we find ourselves awash in reissues. And, while each one will find its niche, it takes not just great source material but exceptional bonus, “new-to-us” music to rise above the glut of old-white-guy box sets. Neil Young’s 1972 essential Harvest has received the special treatment for its 50th (plus a few months) anniversary. Half a century after its original release, it remains perhaps his best (and most beloved) album, more than worthy of revisiting on its own merits. But part of the fun of these reissues is the extra goodies that enhance the original songs and help the listener peer into the process of making music, and this is where the 50th Anniversary Edition excels. I located this group of songs through some questions asked by people who would write me letters at the Archives, and they are very helpful. These are the soul of the Archives community — these people who write letters and talk about things that they remember, because I can go into the Archives and find things and make them come to life, these memories that people bring out. So I found Summer Songs, there’s four albums that it’s from. These songs are real early, and they weren’t heard again for years. That’s how that ends, and there’s 11 albums in between it. It’s crazy. We have a two-hour film and a record. It’s all of the making of Harvest. We had all that, but we didn’t show it to anybody — all the barn footage and live stuff with the London Symphony Orchestra. When we were doing that, we did a lot of filming.Neil Young – acoustic guitar, vocal, harmonica; Ben Keith – pedal steel guitar; Tim Drummond – bass; Kenny Buttrey – drums Album – Classifica settimanale WK 49 (dal 02.12.2022 al 08.12.2022)" (in Italian). It’s like a documentary of something that’s happening that you think you know what’s happening, but you’re not sure. That’s an interesting one. The way that happened was, that’s take one. I had a little chord pattern going, I believe [it] repeats itself through the whole song.

That’s why I think it would be really cool if the leaders of the biggest countries in the world got on the same stage, or even on a televised thing, and all said the same thing and agreed and told everybody in the world that this is a serious thing and this is what you should do. It’s very simple, and it might have a lot more effect than all of this petty governing — governor of one state against a governor of another state. We need big leaders all agreeing we’re in trouble. We got to do this. Scientists say this is safe. I’m sure that all of the governments of Russia, China, and the United States all agree on what needs to be done. I don’t think there’s any doubt there.
