Marlon’s story is told in a first person narrative that comes alive right from the start, laying bare his insecurities, hopes and dreams. When things go wrong, it’s impossible not to feel for him. He’s an engagingly authentic main character who cares deeply about both his mother and his brother and who wants to stay out of trouble but, ultimately, he feels he has no alternative other than to confront the world he’d hoped for so long to avoid. I groaned when he made bad choices, cheered when he got things right and felt like I knew him as well as I knew my own friends when I was that age. It also has two kinds of hidden behaviors that the crew needs to pay attention to: Hunger and Happiness. Honestly I’d be quite happy do go and push this book at so many people with the above (and I’m still mad at myself for taking so long to read Orangeboy). Especially because I adore the two main female characters in this book so much, Tish and Marlon’s mother. At times I could have just shaken Marlon for not realising what these women were doing but that leads to spoilers and I most certainly don’t want to spoil anything about this book for anyone. Orangeboy by Patrice Lawrence | Waterstones

When Happiness is high enough and Hunger is below 30%, the Happy icon will appear above its head. But if Happiness is low enough regardless of Hunger rate, the Sad icon will appear instead. Not cool enough, not clever enough, not street enough for anyone to notice me. I was the kid people looked straight through. NOT ANY MORE. NOT SINCE MR ORANGE. Sixteen-year-old Marlon has made his mum a promise - he'll never follow his big brother, Andre, down the wrong path. So far, it's been easy, but when a date ends in tragedy, Marlon finds himself hunted. They're after the mysterious Mr Orange, and they're going to use Marlon to get to him. Marlon's out of choices - can he become the person he never wanted to be, to protect everyone he loves? About This Edition ISBN: This book has great teen appeal. Be prepared to read it in one sitting as you will not want to put this book down! Marlon’s out of choices – can he become the person he never wanted to be, to protect everyone he loves?Danuta Kean, "Waterstones children's prize shortlists reflect readers' search for hope in anxious times", The Guardian, 8 February 2017. Sixteen-year-old Marlon Sunday has made a promise to his mum that he’ll never follow his older brother Andrew on the destructive path into the drug and gang culture that’s rife amongst London’s teens. Although he has every intention of keeping that promise, it becomes a lot harder when Sonya Wilson, a girl from his school, starts to take an interest in him. When that happens, Marlon’s life starts to take some very unexpected turns. Its Halloween outfit is the sheriff costume, which is mainly the sheriff hat with a star badge attached to it.

Every Pet needs to eat to relinquish their Hunger, which increases by 0.03% every second (maximum hunger reached in 3333 seconds or roughly 1 hour). At 30% Hunger, Pets become hungry and the Hunger icon will appear above their head to notify the crew that they need feeding. The player can feed them by dropping an appropriate food item on the ground and the tamed Creature will approach and consume it immediately. It stops requiring food when Hunger is below 30%. Plotting and pacing: This is a strong aspect of the novel. It’s a pacey read, with plenty going on in poor Marlon’s life. There’s the whole ‘Mr Orange’ mystery, but there’s also plenty of conflict and mess in his family life too. I enjoyed the thread about his Dad, and the way this was linked in through music – I think that’s a key way a lot of people relate through the generations, which isn’t always noted, so it was nice to see it brought out here. A gritty coming-of-age drama urban thriller with a powerful message and an irresistable central character. The Voice

That being said, it was an okay read and I understand why it won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2017 for Older Fiction. Blurb says: Not cool enough, not clever enough, not street enough for anyone to notice me. I was gripped by Orangeboy from start to finish, and spent much of the latter stages of the book trying to work out how the hell Marlon was going to come out of the story in one piece. His journey is both uncomfortable and uplifting, as he struggles against what seem to be insurmountable odds. When well-fed (0-30% Hunger), the Orange Boy will start producing some items at a specific rate, most commonly a pile of Poop. At 50% Happiness and beyond, it may produce the Chitin Chunk. At 80% Happiness and beyond, there is a 30% chance it will lay the Strange Egg, which can be deconstructed for materials or used to hatch another Orange Boy. Orangeboy (Hodder Children's Books, 2016, ISBN 978-1444927207. Also available as an audiobook, narrated by Ben Bailey Smith. [18] There are four Pet Food types that Pets can consume: type 1, type 2, type 3, and monster food. Corpses can be consumed by the Orange Boy if its hunger is anywhere between 70-100%. Corpses will completely feed the Orange Boy and provide 10 happiness. The Orange Boy can only eat Pet Food type 3, which satiates 50% Hunger and increases 5% Happiness. The story follows, Marlon, a young man whose brother was involved in street gangs until an accident several years ago changed everything. Marlon promised his mum he'd stay in school and avoid his brother's old life, but when old feuds reemerge and his family and friends are threatened, it's not quite so easy to keep his promise. The Orange Boy has two inventory slots that can be accessed when alive and grabbed by the player. Any small items can be stored here, but they're mostly for the Pet Name Tag if the player wishes to name the Pet. If it dies, the body will splatter and any contents in its inventory will be destroyed. Built-in business intelligence reports provide an effective means to understand where your library is in relation to its objectives in real time. Edit 9.9.17 Can't believe I forgot to point out some shitty off hand comments made in this book. Early on, Tish tells Marlon not to listen to any 'wrist slitty' music which is just a stupid way to define anything and irritated me. Not long after that, Marlon's journey to school is delayed because somebody killed themselves by jumping in front of a tube train.. the explanation given is that they must not have liked Mondays. I find this very offensive- it just ignores (at best) mental illness and trying to make suicide funny is plain wrong. This novel fell flat. It began with such urgency - throwing me straight into a great mystery-esque set up that I couldn't wait to follow. But then Patrice Lawrence did the unforgivable and just threw the mystery out the window. I'm frustrated.
