In addition, the plot unfortunately coalesces predictably (and not nearly as intricately as the scheming characters, and probably the author, imagine it does), and the denouement seems less inevitably tragic than sadly pointless. The characters drive this story and the background noise really does fade away as you become consumed by their many plights. I have never adored a set of characters more in my existence, and I found myself genuinely rooting for their ambitions and relationships. I love Marya Antonova with every fiber of my being, and I WILL DEFEND HER ACTIONS UNTIL MY DYING BREATHE. But I do wish the magic was explained a little more clearly, as I’m still not entirely sure how it works.

The brief pause that passed between them was loaded with things neither expressed aloud nor requiring explanation.
