There is plenty of humour, but also serious and sensitive moments that are handled well - you can definitely tell the author is drawing on. Pulling from his own personal experience, this story of a talented teen filmmaker who discovers he needs open heart surgery is an emotional ride as Jesse tries to get his Zombie movie filmed before he goes under the knife. I've read plenty of books with bumbling, awkward MC's that start babbling in serious situations but this one hit all the wrong notes for me. The body image issues are very relevant and tie in well with the internet-driven prejudices about appearance that dominate teens and YAs thinking.

I don’t care if some situations/scenes are a little over the top because everything is so matching and cute. It was for me predictable at times and I knew certain things from the get go but I still enjoyed the ride and getting to know the characters on a deeper level. This is such a great read and deals with important issues about body image issues, medical conditions and general teen anxieties but handled in a sensitive way and keeping the humour throughout.

Although some serious themes were dealt with in this story—such as body image, internalised homophobia, bullying, death of a parent (past tense), to name a few—the overall tone of the story was upbeat and full of heart-warming and humorous moments that both charmed and amused. Jesse, Cas and Morgan are more than best friends, they’re soulmates, even better they’re all masters of their crafts - directing, filming, acting. From thrillers for Young Adults to gripping whodunnits for grown-ups, he has written in almost every genre of fiction. This is a heartfelt (pun intended), heart warming (sorry I'll stop), heart wrenching (okay I'm done for real) story of self-esteem, courage, achievement, friendship, and above all, love.
