The PBY Catalina is perhaps most associated with patrol and rescue missions in the South Pacific during WWII, but it was used in Europe and credited with finding the Bismarck. A total of 2,876 shells had been fired, giving the German ship a hammering that no other warship could have taken.

Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine - German Navy of the 1935-1945 period. In the late 1970’s, they again chose this size for a new line of ship models that would be much easier to build with intricate details. The next morning, Bismarck was finally surrounded by the British fleet in the continuous onslaught by nearly two hours after Bismarck finally sank in the Atlantic Ocean.Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits by Prince of Wales to force an end to the raiding mission. The original Bismarck battleship was one of the two ships from the Bismarck class, named after the famous German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck who was behind the unification of Germany in 1871. The launch of the Bismark took place on February 14, 1939 in Hamburg in the presence of Hitler, Raeder, Keitel, Göring, Goebbels, Hess, Ribbentrop, Himmler, Bormann and von Schirach, to underline the importance that was given to the event.
