About a week ago, I went on a car trip with Oot, and we listened to this book together. I see why he liked it. It's very tightly written. Good setting. Good mystery. Two POV characters, one boy and one girl. They each have their own plots, and their own character arcs. Their own problems they struggle to resolve. The boy gets angry sometimes, and his father talks to him about it, and the boy tries throughout the book to get a grip on his anger with varying success.

The DVD was released on January 20, 2009, in a DVD-18 format with the widescreen version of the film on one side and the full-screen version on the other. The audio narration is pretty good, if old-school. The most annoying thing was the way the mayor’s dialogue would pause every three words for the super-fat mayor to catch his breath.

[2] Plot summary [ edit ] The weak writing, admittedly present in City of Ember, is more apparent here in the second book...and the story is a bit overbearing & heavyhanded with its message, at the expense of the story-unfolding... The message is peace-keeping and war-avoiding though, so I guess I have a bit of leniency for the message-hammering. In between each take the clang of hammers takes up the silence, relenting only for the jarring alarm that warns filming is underway. That’s usually the way it is with films in production, with sets being built up to the last minute (there are about three weeks of filming left), and City of Ember is no exception. The real question is where they’re going to put it as the city seems to use up every square inch of the gargantuan stage. Which is why the entire set is still dressed and covered with warning signs, which doesn’t stop Gil at all from showing us Loris’ breakfast machine, “something I’m unnecessarily proud of. It’s one of the contraptions that Doon’s father has built, an automatic can opening breakfast machine which I believe every good family film needs to have. So I’m perpetuating a long standing rich movie tradition of breakfast machines and I’m really, really proud of this one because it totally works. It’s amazing. It went from a sketch in my sketch book into a completely non-working, working model in a matter of weeks because we’ve got some brilliant, brilliant physical effects dudes working on this film.”

What do you do when your fifth grader tells you he's reading the greatest book ever and he wants you to try it? You do whatever it takes to find that book and you read it with him. Enthusiasm is contagious...and supporting a child's love for reading is priceless. They’ve already done this a few times, and they’ll be doing it a quite a few times more. Video village is nestled behind a wall somewhere else – there just isn’t enough room on the set proper – so he tends to stand behind the camera and give notes personally. Well, that’s not exactly true because, to be completely honest about it, before HG there were the Japanese novel (1999) and then movie (2000) Battle Royale from which only the blind would say that HG isn’t based upon or at least heavily inspired by. Which, don’t get me wrong, is totally fine; inspiration comes in every shape and form, and if a great book/movie inspired HG author Suzanne Collins to write a great series, then more power to her and more fun to us readers. The apartment itself also has the one thing no other building in the city has; a functional roof. A scene later in the film, which second unit will be shooting part of later today when Saoirse and Harry trade places, calls for Doon to climb out of the apartment onto the ledge of the roof to get away from the city guards. The City of Ember is an engaging children's fiction novel that introduces young readers to courageous characters who take steps to make change happen. The author Jeanne DuPrau writes age-appropriate fantasy/dystopia with mystery, action, adventure, and an exciting cliffhanger that keeps kids interested in the series. My son absolutely LOVES this book! Loves it so much he doesn't want to watch the film adaption for fear of ruining his reading experience (he has learned this lesson early in life LOL). As soon as he finished reading his library copy, he took his allowance money to buy the book so he can own it (I'm SOOOOO proud!). I read this book along with him and I have to say it was pretty good! If you have a young person in your care that needs some reading recommendations, offer this title for them to consider! It is the first of four books so it should keep readers busy for a while. In Sparks there are some rather significant changes to the plot dynamics which allow for some intriguing new commentary on humanity and social interactions. We're given a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity is trying to recover and rebuild. This high level genre is compounded by being seen primarily through the eyes of children and also by making the Emberites ignorant of the disasters that befell humanity or even of human history at all. In fact, through the entire first book, they had no knowledge of any other human culture at all and thought their microcosm to be the extent of humanity. The aforementioned rude little boy never receives any discipline from his parental figure for his behavior, though it is clear to everyone around him that he shouldn't be behaving like that and that his behavior hurts others. He does, however, experience some natural consequences for his actions.
