Description

Kyocera has made a name for itself with super-sharp ceramic knives, so it should come as no surprise that this ceramic peeler performs just as well. Though it’s considerably more expensive than a manual peeler, this would be a major help if you find yourself peeling produce in large quantities (or you’re just trying to give your hands a break). It was so swift and non-stick in cutting and releasing strips of vegetable peel that it lacked control, flinging the peels across the kitchen and onto the floor. The blade swivels, so it’s at the right angle for cutting, and when all the work is done, cleanup is easy since it’s dishwasher safe. Using a cumbersome knife instead is more likely to waste fruit or veg as it’s nigh on impossible to get such thin peelings.

We tested tomatoes to see how they fared with soft skins and citrus fruit to check how well the peelers coped with paring. The peeler coped well with the rounded ends of a potato which can prove tricky with the wrong shaped peeler or a slippery blade. They have comfortable handles, are easy to clean, and come in a set with a straight, serrated, and julienne blade. The best plan for keeping your peeler sharp and ready to use is to look for peelers that offer the ability to replace the blade. Our food editor-at-large Barney Desmazery prefers Y-shaped peelers as he finds they offer more control and seem to be quicker whereas our reviewer Caroline Hire likes a straight peeler for manoeuvring around potato ends and smaller produce. We recommend sticking with stainless steel blades for your peeler: The Kyocera Ceramic Peelers were some of the worst performers in all of our tests.

With each blade on opposite sides, all you have to do is flip the handle around to switch cuts, whether you're right- or left-handed.The Tovolo Magnetic Tri-Peeler set and the Swissmar Double-Edge straight peeler are also great runner-up choices.

The only potential downside to the design is the wide blade, which we found tricky to maneuver over smaller fruit and vegetables. The curved non-slip handle is comfortable, lightweight, and functional for both righties and lefties. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Condé Nast. While it worked wonders on tomatoes, we found it best to move the peeler side-to-side rather than pulling it in the direction of the cut. We thought this peeler felt incredibly smooth when in use and required very little force to get a good cut. This peeler is designed with a sharp eye that can carve out eyes or blemishes on potatoes and other produce, and the comfortable, non-slip contoured handle allows for the user to choke up or grip farther back, depending on how they prefer to hold the tool.

Equipped with six quick-change blades, you can use this attachment for basic vegetable peeling as well as creating large, medium, and ultra-thin noodles. There’s a sharp potato eye remover on the tip as well, making it easy to rid every potato from blemishes. Like Kyocera’s ceramic knives, the blade on this peeler is made from the company’s proprietary zirconia material and will stay sharp much longer than similar metal knives. The Y-shaped tool won't rust or corrode, and the ceramic material minimizes food browning, which comes in handy when peeling large amounts of apples or potatoes.
