After alightment there was a smoother experience but the tines sing, ever so slightly. Not a big deal for me though. I did smooth the tipping a bit and the experience was much improved.

And that’s what it comes down to, really. Dollars and sense. I love talking about pens and showing people new and interesting pens and answering any questions I can about them. But when it comes time to suggest to any individual that they should spend close to two hundred dollars on a pen (in this economy? In any economy?), I still feel like that’s a big ask. At the end of the day the classic, stylish, functional Pilot Vanishing Point just pushes the limits of accessibility for the average user. Pieces like the Majohns we looked at today offer an affordable entry point to the wider world of fountain pens, and that is an objectively good thing.

So we could say that the Pilot EF is finer with roughly the same conditions. I'll probably buy the Pilot 18K EF nib unit later on so thanks on making up my mind on that front. As long as I use the pen daily, it doesn't dry out. If I leave it sitting around for a few days, just wiping the nib and feed down with a tissue will get the pen to write again. Currently the A1 is only available with an EF (0.4mm) steel nib option, but I've seen one review that proves they're absolutely compatible with VP nib units. Personally I use them as test balloons when I'm uncertain about a design feature (e.g. the grip section of a Leonardo Momento Zero or the clip on the VP). If I like the writing experience, I may eventually get the non-Chinese pen. I have used the pen for about 2 weeks now on consistent basis and I would say I have no problems with the performance or build quality so far. Whereas I'd be happy for the pens to be clearly, or even prominently, branded Majohn instead of Moonman on the exterior. A name is just a name, and quite frankly neither of those sounds classier than each other.

Hey, thanks for providing the comparison write up. Was only able to reply recently despite viewing it a couple of days ago. Alignment was not hot, I had to manually align the nib tines. They weren't terrible, but the alignment was clear the minute you stoked from left to right.So the nib unit is nearly exactly the same as pilots, so much so it is said the two are interchangeable. Neat that it is this way, you can use a good nib from Pilot if you so desire. I have several Moonman pens, and they all write nicely right out of the box. For Mahjohn specifically, while they will not earn the reputation of “innovation” for what they have done here, being able to mass produce faithful and high quality replicas is a skill in and of itself, and the world needs such produces just as much as the innovators.
