Description

The concept of Conversation Clear plus revolves around the three modes we discussed earlier. These modes allow you to manage active noise reduction via the relax mode, the transparent mode, thanks to the communication mode, or the balance between these two functions when listening to music via the streaming mode. RELAX MODE Conversation Clear Plus provide a respectable sound quality in everyday quiet or one-on-one situations. The audio feed is full, or broadband, and relatively true to how the surrounding world sounds in normal listening conditions without earbuds. There is also no perceptible delay, or latency, which aids the realism of their ambient awareness system. My experiences while streaming music were also similar. In the box you will find the two earbuds, 3 sizes of eartips and ear fins (small through large), a charging case, USB-C cable, and documentation. Conversation Clear Plus arrives with the medium eartips and ear fins preinstalled. It is worth trying the different sizes to find the best fit as this can improve comfort, stability in-ear, and sound quality. Once this is sorted, it does not take long to pair with the Conversation Clear app and head out into the world. Battery Life & Rechargeability

In concrete terms, the relax mode will analyse the ambient sounds captured by the microphones and perform a phase inversion so that you don’t hear them through the headphones. In other words, this mode will allow you to adjust the external sounds from 0 to 100%. The Sennheiser Conversation Clear Plus has no pairing button on the housing. This allows you to connect to a smartphone or computer even if you don’t have the headset. To do this, press the buttons on both earphones for a few seconds until they flash blue. The headphones then appear in the Bluetooth settings of your phone or computer. THE SENNHEISER CONVERSATION CLEAR APPLICATION Battery life is rated at nine hours and 27 in total with the charging case (two extra charges). Given the Conversation Clear Plus’ many use cases I don’t think it would be fair to judge its battery life on streaming audio alone but battery life, in general, was solid throughout testing. There’s no wireless charging as the case’s reserves are boosted by a USB-C connection. Utilizing sophisticated Sonova chip technology, conversations and calls are enhanced thanks to the Sennheiser Automatic Scene Detection feature, which analyzes the noise level of a user's environment and matches the speech enhancement level to their surroundings. Those interested in advanced wireless earbuds: Sennheiser Conversation Clear Plus are true wireless stereo earbuds with advanced features for streaming, noise reduction, and improving speech clarity. The Sennheiser Conversation Clear Plus does look like classic wireless headphones at first glance. They have short stems pointing towards the mouth, and you can clearly see the microphones’ locations. As the name suggests, the whole point of Conversation Clear Plus is to analyse ambient noise. So there’s no question of offering small, discreet microphones. The sound quality is far too strong in the midrange, which results in a dry and flat sound. The call quality could be better to convince, and the rudimentary Bluetooth connection makes them frustrating to use daily. Hearing loss is a silent issue, one affecting many adults – but as a topic, it hasn’t received the attention it merits. https://habr.com/en/post/456182/ (whole thing is very interesting, but the section titled "Bluetooth 5, Classic and Low Energy" explains this)

After onboarding is completed you gain full access to the app and the three user modes for relaxation, communication, and audio streaming. The first mode, Relax, is designed for comfort and provides user controls over external sounds from 0 (max reduction) to 100% (normal ambience). Conversation Clear Plus uses one of the two onboard microphones for ambient awareness which provides a more 360 degree picture of your surroundings. Communication is the second setting where you can experience the full benefits of Conversation Clear Plus’s multi-mic beamforming speech enhancement capabilities. The app defaults to a specific volume based on your initial onboarding preferences and the volume can be further customized from there. A Clarity Boost switch is also available when further speech enhancement is needed. The final Streaming mode provides a slider for you to control the balance between streamed and ambient signals. Various tabs for support and your personal settings are also available. Hearing loss is inevitable as we get older, but finding you have an issue and doing something about it has, historically, taken longer than it needs to. Help is on the way though, with several headphone brands looking to take leadership in that area. What's more, is the ease of use - setup seems to be incredibly simple and there's plenty of extra guidance to help you along, particularly within the adjoining smartphone app which has step-by-step directions and a useful FAQ link. The tech savvy individual: These devices are best suited for those who are mildly tech savvy as the app-based adjustments help you get the most out of Conversation Clear Plus. Sennheiser? Ahh yes...." ok you get the point...we're known for various things in various circles. The circle you and I are in right now is indeed audiophile focused. We're glad Conversation Clear Plus is getting some awareness here, but recognize it's not what this circle will choose first for their application. The company with the Sennheiser name on it is everywhere you find audio.

The app/earbuds can switch between modes on its own with its Automatic Scene Detection, but the execution is also a mixed bag. The feature constantly monitors noise level but that also means it’s constantly switching between various noise cancelling levels, those little chimes become more frequent if you’re in a busy setting, and after a while it distracts. Performance Sennheiser? Ahh yes, they make all of the broadcast headsets we use for on-air programming" - ESPN sound tech Sennheiser already offers an application for its headphones and earphones, Sennheiser Smart Control. The Conversation Clear plus require, however, to go through another mobile application: Sennheiser Conversation Clear. This is listed on the Play Store and App Store as being developed by Sonova, a sign that it is indeed a product designed primarily to help people with hearing loss.Though I was able to hear conversations really clearly, when it came to having a conversation, I found the earbuds were somewhat of a barrier. Even with non-noise cancelling headphones, I automatically want to take my earphone out to have a conversation, and that’s because your own voice sounds amplified when you have something in your ear. That’s even more the case with these in, as they completely seal your ear. There are a few areas in which the Conversation Clear Plus could be better – and they are fairly fundamental. Bluetooth is v4.2 with SBC codec support, and while the connection has been fine when used in pubs and offices, walking through Waterloo did cause a spotty connection. The headphones will analyse the sounds around you to gauge your environment best and calibrate which sounds to reduce and which to keep. In practice, the effect will be relatively weak in a quiet room. In a noisy place, however, the filter will be more pronounced. On the other hand, the headphones will tend to emphasise only the mid-range frequencies and therefore offer a rather tiring sound to listen to, which will need more depth.

For what it’s worth, codecs are really the only issue here when it comes to audio quality — newer Bluetooth versions since 4.2 have thus far added nothing in terms of audio performance. Sennheiser? Ahh yes, they make those yellow hi-fi headphones...I still use them to this day" - OG audiophile Which offers a nice segue into the Communication mode. Switch to this mode and voices are more audible and there’s better awareness of what’s around me. Trying them in a pub, they hit the mark in terms of improving the vocal clarity of others. Sennheiser has integrated large 12mm diameter transducers for the audio part of its headphones. According to the manufacturer, this allows for the reproduction of frequencies from 20 to 20,000 Hz. It should also be noted that the Conversation Clear Plus are only compatible with one Bluetooth audio codec: SBC. Conversation Clear Plus is also a larger earbud which plugs your ear entirely when worn properly. This means there is potential for the occlusion effect, which refers to the increased perception of your own voice when your ears are plugged. This is often undesirable and described as a “hollow” or “echo” sound quality. Fortunately, the “pass-through” ambient awareness system helps minimize this effect. Conversation Clear Plus also offers active occlusion cancellation (AOC) which further improves the naturalness of your own voice. This element of Conversation Clear Plus was impressive and improved general comfort during long-term wear.In concrete terms, the Conversation Clear application is different from Smart Control. It doesn’t offer multiple noise reduction modes, touch controls, or the ability to change the equaliser on the headphones. After a few hearing tests to fine-tune the volume and clarity level, you will have access to three tabs: relax, communication and stream. Bluetooth version alone isn’t the key in any way as there are many great 4.2 products out there that support better codecs. BT version has just been a convenient (but mostly meaningless) spec sheet buzzword in the wireless headphone world. Overall the bluetooth connection was reliable and stable throughout my time using the devices. Personalizing my settings with the app was also straightforward and easy. While the app is a nice feature, adjustments can seem limited by comparison and there was no obvious way to turn the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) feature on or off. How Do They Sound?
