Der Tragödie nächster Abschnitt führt uns nun zu den Astartes der Death Guard mit ihrem abtrüngigen Primarch Mortarion.

Almost identical to the previous main character in every way except that Loken's natural disposition to question and consider lead to his position as a hero, whereas happenstance and fluke largely lead to Garro's actions. There was one scene with a bunch of warriors awaiting a battle and I had just thought to note down that rank seemed less important to this crew, when suddenly the book said it for me: "There were no barriers of rank or Legion here. This book is bloody brilliant and seriously one of Swallows crowning achievements of his great, if vacillating in quality, work with Black Library. This is written from a different perspective this time; that being from Battle Captain Nathaniel Garro of the 7th Company from the Death Guard. It was with some horror that I started this book and realised that I'd never actually read a Black Library novel by James Swallow, my experience of him thus far restricted to a few Blood Angels short stories and his Star Trek novels. The Flight of the Eisenstein is a novel by James Swallow and the fourth book in The Horus Heresy series.

I read a lot of historical fiction so that was a cool parallel, and coming from professional men aboard these enormous gothic starships was particularly jarring, in-keeping with the whole process of faster-than-light travel through hell! If you've made it this far, you're probably familiar with the past three books, which tells the tale of Horus and his betrayal up to this point. Can Garro and his men survive the depredations of Chaos and get his warning to the Emperor before Horus' plans reach fruition? It truly is the the opening quadrilogy with Flight of the Eisenstein closing the initial chapter of the Horus Heresy spectacularly that is essential and exquisite. One thing that I loved about the novel was that where we would normally see hope, the arrive of the Phalanx and Co.it reads fast, you will see a Primach konfronted with gruesome truth and learn a few things about imperial space ships. It explains how the Emperor comes to know of the treason of his son, the Warmaster Horus, who has murdered the loyal soldiers under his command. Keeler and the gang are back, but don't take centre stage, nonetheless they're used well as background characters - there to keep the plot moving but not stealing the limelight.

Can Garro and his men survive the depredations of Chaos and get his warning to the Emperor before Horus’s plans reach fruition? We get a variety of battle scenes here, ranging from Death Guard Pre-Heresy conflicts to space combat. If you're going to have a premise with one, known, outcome then either have a protagonist who might have ulterior motives, or introduce some other uncertainty either in the plot or in the intentions of the characters. Taken to Terra to account for themselves, Garro and his men convince Dorn of Horus's betrayal helped by Euphrati Keeler and are placed in holding cells of Terra's moon Luna, in the stronghold of the Sisters of Silence. This is an unfortunate event to build a book on, as the outcome is guaranteed: the forces of Chaos don't come out victorious. Here instead, we're given a book of fully-fleshed characters with dreams, desires and motivations, set against a backdrop of war, intrigue and a literal fight for one's soul. Un crescendo di narrazione e di dettagli, con l'ingresso di numerosi personaggi importanti, tra i quali alla fine Lord Malcador, Reggente della Terra, il secondo dopo l'Imperatore stesso. Running throughout the sequence of the 'flight' and its immediate aftermath is also a fabulous sense of the perils of the warp, which put me in mind of the way the ocean was seen by ancient sailors; respected, feared, capricious and inherently unknowable. James Swallow is best known for being the author of the Horus Heresy novels Fear to Tread and Nemesis, which both reached the New York Times bestseller lists, The Flight of the Eisenstein and four audio dramas featuring the character Nathaniel Garro.
