Petrol cars also produce more CO2 than diesel. But petrol hybrids produce significantly less climate changing CO2 than both. Looking across all cars we’ve tested, petrol hybrids emit around 24% less than petrol or diesel. However, the plan also states that these restrictions should be removed in the event that emission levels fall enough to be legally compliant and ‘there is no risk of legal limits being breached again’. Put simply, the only difference between these two fuels is their Research Octane Number, with the higher-octane 95 unleaded designed to be more fuel efficient and lead to a smoother engine operation. Table notes: All results from Which? independent tests, under the latest test programme (2017 onwards). Numbers tested: 135 diesel engines, 169 petrol engines, 20 full petrol hybrids. Diesel hybrids are relatively rare and we have not tested enough to present a meaningful average.

Pull into any filling station either here or abroad and you might be surprised by just how many different types of fuel there seems to be these days. Last year, the facelift for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire not only brought design changes and a longer equipment list, but also the replacement of the 1.2-litre K12M petrol engine with the 1.2-litre K12N unit that comes with a start-stop function. The Mazda 2 looks great, drives brilliantly, and has plenty of standard kit. The base 75bhp petrol does 58.9mpg, but for a bit more you can get the 90bhp version which ekes out a diesel-rivalling 60.1mpg. Some alternatives do offer more impressive tech, though. Like a little terrier that barks at big dogs, the Suzuki Ignis is feisty and eager. When it grows up it wants to be a big 4x4, but let’s hope it doesn’t grow up as it’s good fun just the way it is. Other city cars are more polished and comfortable, but there’s not a lot wrong with 56.9mpg. There is no consistent law surrounding fuel storage and there is currently no International, European or British Standard for the storage of petrol in metal containers. However, there are many references to a “suitable” or “robust” container in the legislation, which states that “a UN-Approved metal container meeting the performance requirements for the carriage of petrol… would be considered robust for most storage conditions.” In terms of volume, HSE states that “suitable petrol containers” include:

Hybrids were to be banned from sale in new car showrooms from 2035 — five years after the original target for pure petrol and diesel models — though at the time of writing it’s unclear how Sunak’s delay on petrol and diesel will affect hybrid models. That’s despite our independent emission tests, which are tougher than the official tests, showing that modern diesel and petrol cars are cleaner than they’ve ever been. But while they may have improved, they’re still being surpassed by hybrid cars in terms of fuel economy and emissions. The exception being motorway fuel economy - this is where diesel still has the edge, but it’s a battle that’s slowly being lost. Yes, the sale of new diesel vans will be banned from 2035 and diesel lorries will be phased out. 4. Will I be able to buy a second-hand petrol or diesel car after 2035? Yes. Sales of new diesels will be banned along with sales of new petrol cars from 2035. Sales of new hybrid cars will also cease in 2035.

Labelling for unleaded petrol (and diesel) changed in Summer 2019 to match the EU standardisation requirements of the time. Instead of being called “unleaded” or “diesel”, fuels started being referred to for their biofuel blend – unleaded petrol called E for ethanol and diesel called B for biodiesel – and their biofuel percentage. Supermarketfuel conforms to the same standards (the British Standard) as branded fuels supplied by one of the major oil companies.

The new engine with the manual gearbox has an ARAI-claimed fuel economy of 22.35kpl, while the new AMT versions have an even higher fuel economy of 22.94kpl. Diesel vehicles produce higher levels of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which have been linked to increased risk of respiratory illnesses, lung cancer, heart disease and many other conditions. Some retailers sell their own high-performance, high-octane fuels, e.g. Total Excellium Unleaded and Shell V-Power Unleaded, which has an octane rating of 99 RON, the UK’s highest. However, he added that 'technicalities' could hinder military personnel in switching to driving civilian vehicles. Electric cars may not emit CO2, but they aren't squeaky clean. As with any type of car, there is a CO2 cost of generating and delivering the fuel a car needs, including electricity. How much electricity a car needs over a year comes down to its efficiency, and that varies massively from one model to another, and will vary across electric cars. So if there is a shortage of HGV drivers - and there is by 100,000 - then it is inevitable that we are not going to get all the things we want when we want them." It is not a case of running out - and people should not panic buy," he added. Read More Related Articles

Current MOT rules say that any car with a DPF that emits visible smoke, or has found evidence of DPF tampering, will fail its MOT. If your DPF does need replacing, the cost can run into thousands of pounds. There are several advantages of petrol engines, especially when compared to diesel. For starters, generally, petrol is cheaper to buy at the pumps, while it’s much better suited to shorter journeys and stop-start traffic than a diesel because they’re less likely to get clogged up. Yes, provided you have a licence to store petrol at your premises issued by your local Petroleum Enforcing Authority (PEA). Your local PEA can issue you with a licence if you are storing more than 275 litres of petrol, and the licence can include conditions relating to your storage and dispensing arrangements. The petrol and diesel car ban is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve local air quality. Petrol and diesel cars emit CO2 and Britain has a legal target to cut greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050. As a general rule, you can use a higher-octane fuel than is recommended for your car (although it might well have no discernible advantages) however using a lower-octane fuel than recommended could cause engine damage.
