Arranging files on the device is effected via the Menu button; this calls up a choice of five locations to save recordings: Folder A, B, C, D and E, plus a dedicated Music folder – which all correspond to the subfolder structure that’s displayed when attaching the LS-P1 to a computer. The LS-P1 has 90º directional microphones and a Zoom mode offering targeted focus (Image credit: Future) Performance

Olympus LS-P4 Review - MusicTech

In reading through the manual, it gradually occurred to me that the mic settings are turned off when an external mic is plugged in. It doesn't say that explicitly, so I was not entirely sure, but I believe you are correct. I switched in the low pass filter on the LS-P4, turned the recording mode to manual, turned recording sensitivity up to maximum, level 30, and did my walk at dawn.Think pro-quality audio recording means bulky and expensive kit? The Olympus LS-P4 encourages you to think again

The elephant in the room is Apple's lightning connector. European regulators are putting pressure on Apple to ditch its Lightning connector in favour of a universal standard such as USB-C. If they are successful, then the MV88 may be forced into early obsolescence. I tested my cable with an ohmmeter. It does the right thing. The + goes to tip & ring, the - and gnd go to sleeve. It is mono to the L&R from a single phase. There is no "out of phase" thing happening. Shotgun microphones don't actually amplify sound, but they reduce off-axis sounds. So, it won't amplify the sound coming from a far away bird but it can still reject noise from a nearby road (for example). Then there’s the sound quality. Okay, microphones on phones are improving, but the LS-P4 features a Tresmic array: three microphones for capturing stereo sound with centre microphone that helps extend the bass response down to 20Hz.OMS chart states a slight runtime on battery difference in favor of the LS-P4. You did assume that the P5 might run longer because it has double the battery capacity (which sounds like a resonable assumption). Seemingly the P5 consumes more juice because of the new features 🙁 Did I have the recording level too high? Is there some sort of limiter that is producing the sound? Is the mic just no good for this? I don't want a large microphone at the moment, but I am prepared to spend more on a better one. Lode is a brilliantly simple free synth for Ableton Live and Push 3 that sounds a lot like the Roland TB-303 Whilst the ME66 has a stronger output signal than many of the competitors, the shotgun mics are not designed to amplify the sound so much as cut out extraneous sound from either side, the fact that the ME66 does to some extent is a definite and worthwhile bonus. For strong directional recording you have to move into the realms of parabolic reflectors, which are not portable or cheap.

Olympus LS-P4: High sound quality. Small file size

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so. Working alongside professional photographers for many years as a jobbing journalist gave Niall the curiosity to also start working on the other side of the lens. These days his favored shooting subjects include wildlife, travel and street photography, and he also enjoys dabbling with studio still life.

Also in the box are a 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead of 25cm length. A two part fixing that will attach to a camera shoe and a wind muffler to fit over the microphones. I think that there is a setting for plug in power in the menu, ideally this should be off for your current set-up but shouldn't be a problem if left on. Having now received the Rode Lavalier Go mic and tried it out for some days, I have to say that I like it. DOD unveils the Chthonic Fuzz – a pedal “capable of the darkest, most potent fuzz to subtle touches of sonic grit and everywhere in between” I have also tried it out on my walks and the results were perfectly acceptable for my purposes. As I originally said, I am looking for some way to record all the birds I hear on my walks. The setup proved to be very capable of recording even quite distant calls. Whilst these cannot be considered definitive recordings, I had no trouble at all recognising calls from 150-200 metres away. I used the pop filter and a small furry windshield, but this did not stop some wind noise getting through. Maybe I need to use a second, bigger furry mouse.

This is a nice video about using parabolic mics for bird recordings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRXPy6ybPiA Boasting compatibility with FLAC format recording, which reduces file size without a drop in quality, the Olympus LS-P4 delivers superb audio fidelity. Equipped with a 3 microphone system, the LS-P4 offers stereo sound, as well as low frequency recording. Delivering 96kHz/24-bit recording quality, with 8GB built-in memory and an SD card slot, the LS-P4 is perfect for a wide range of recording applications. Normally with such devices I use one of several local venues to capture a gig or three be it trio, quartet or larger group, sadly this was not possible at the moment and even when we return to ‘normality’ there is still ‘social distancing’ to overcome. However it did mean that talking with my neighbours in normal voice was caught effectively even at two metres or more. The Zoom mode can work over even longer distances.

Features

I can only hope that the ME66/K6 work as they should. My indoor test on a low-volume radio broadcast seemed to show the mic certainly is more sensitive than the internal mics on the LS-P4, so I think it is in good shape. However loading the file onto the computer and recording another file in a silent room to get a sample of the noise from the microphones and the pre-amps, which was loaded onto the computer. I used Audacity (free) to sample the noise file in the noise reduction tool and used the same tool to subtract the noise from the birdsong file and then amplified it. Easier to do than talk about - step by step instructions can be provided. As you will see from past threads the Olympus LS series have been used with your type microphone over many years with excellent results, other than when there has been a cabling problem, so hopefully you should soon be getting some useful recordings.
