Description

This was the tail end of the 1960s on the South Side of Chicago. The Cubs weren’t bad, but they weren’t great, either. I’d sit on my dad’s lap in his recliner and listen to him narrate how the Cubs were playing or why Billy Williams, who lived just around the corner from us on Constance Avenue, had such a sweet swing from the left side of the plate. Outside the ballparks, America was in the midst of a massive and uncertain change. The Kennedys were dead. Martin Luther King Jr. had been killed standing on a balcony in Memphis, setting off riots across the country, including in Chicago. The 1968 Democratic National Convention turned bloody as police went after Vietnam War protesters with batons and tear gas in Grant Park, about nine miles north of where we lived. White families, meanwhile, were moving out of the city to the suburbs, drawn by the promise of better schools, more space, and probably more whiteness, too. An English-language edition of Becoming is published in the UK and British Commonwealth territories by Viking, an imprint of Penguin Books at Penguin Random House UK. Good night!” she’d exclaim in the middle of the day, with the same blast of exasperation someone else might say, “Oh, for God’s sake!” Few, it seemed, could live up to Robbie’s standards. Now adapted for younger readers, with new photographs and a new introduction from Michelle Obama herself, this memoir tells a very personal, and completely inspiring, story of how, through hard work and determination, the girl from the South Side of Chicago built an extraordinary life. You'll be inspired to help others, and understand that no one is perfect. Just like Michelle Obama, you too are finding out exactly who you want to be (and, actually, so are the adults in your life). That is what a control freak learns in college, maybe above all else. There are simply other ways of being. Also available as a Young Readers edition adapted for children ages 10 and up, with a special introduction for kids written by the author, and 3 full-color photo inserts.

It was a great read. Michelle Obama is no slouch. She grew up in a middle class family on the south side of Chicago. She was a determined student studying at Princeton and then getting her law degree from Harvard. To my friend that is a elementary teacher: Michelle discs her second grade teacher, we all have had one, at least, teacher that didn't do us justice. But you aren't that person. You are that teacher that goes over and above for a student, and they will always remember that, too. Donald Trump is barely mentioned until the end, briefly about the 2012 election and again about the 2016 election and she expresses her opinions politely. Growing up, Michelle and her older brother, Craig, shared a bedroom in their family’s upstairs apartment in her great-aunt’s house. Her parents, Fraser and Marian, poured their love and energy into their children. Michelle’s beloved dad taught his kids to work hard, keep their word, and remember to laugh. Her mom showed them how to think for themselves, use their voice, and be unafraid.Puffin is an imprint of Penguin Random House, the world’s number-one publisher representing a vibrant community of publishing houses marked by unparalleled success. Through our world of stories, Puffin aims to open up the world to every child. Our mission is to inspire children to feel they can be and do anything, and to create readers for life. For every door that’s been opened to me, I’ve tried to open my doors to others. Then we can begin to fear less, make fewer wrong assumptions and embrace the way we are. It's not about being perfect, but it's about allowing the power inside yourself to be known and heard, using your unique voice, willing to know and hear others. This for me, is how we become.’ For eight years, I lived in the White House, a place with more stairs than I can count— plus elevators, a bowling alley, and an in-house florist. I slept in a bed that was made up with Italian linens. Our meals were cooked by a team of world- class chefs and delivered by professionals more highly trained than those at any five-star restaurant or hotel. Secret Service agents, with their earpieces and guns and deliberately flat expressions, stood outside our doors, doing their best to stay out of our family’s private life. We got used to it, eventually, sort of— the strange grandeur of our new home and also the constant, quiet presence of others.

A brilliant, open, fascinating read, which I think some of our older students will thoroughly enjoy. A younger reader's edition of the number-one bestselling memoir by former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. With a new introduction from Mrs Obama herself Puffin started out as a non-fiction publisher, with its first title appearing in 1940. As the most iconic and well-known children’s book brand in the UK today, we are always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell the world’s favourite stories and for brilliant new debut talent and brands that connect with today’s young readers, from newborn up to twelve years old.

I have learned through my years of trying to find balance in my life that it is okay to flip priorities and care only for ourselves one in a while, to say sorry, folks, I'm doing this for me. What's important is our story, our whole story, including those moments when we feel a little vulnerable . . .

A younger reader's edition of the number-one bestselling memoir by former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. With a new introduction from Mrs Obama herself* podemos viver no mundo como ele é, mas mesmo assim trabalhar para criarmos o mundo como ele devia ser. “ I also loved her journey to the law firm and how she was torn between quitting to do something she loved and get paid less or keep the steady flow of money going and keep doing a job that made her miserable.

Even if we don't know the details, we[Michelle and her brother] were instructed to remember that everyone on earth was carrying around an unseen history, and that alone deserves some tolerance. A tale of ups and downs, triumphs and failures, this is an incredibly honest account. It will take you from the early years - first kiss, first school, first love - to the wonders of the White House, and the moment Mrs Obama shook hands with the Queen of England.
