Description

When I married my husband we started creating our own flashcards on the computer. My husband also taught theory, so we developed hundreds of different cards that suited the various teaching situations. Alternatively you can print out all the cards and organize them into your grade or examination levels that you need. That way, whenever you have a student doing a particular grade you can pull out the appropriate set.

How to Read Music with Music Reading Tool This ingenious sliding card helps you see the connection between the musical staff and the piano keyboard. I made these many years ago and use them all the time at group lessons for team rhythm dictation games! Take a peak at a pair of siblings using these for a rhythmic dictation challenge. Set a pile on the floor of MULTIPLE SETS of cards. Then say, " Put all the treble/top hand cards in one pile, and thebass/bottom handcards in a different pile!" That may be hard enough. I’ve been a long-time fan and Piano Safariteacher, but I just recently found out about this wonderful set of free flashcards that correlate with Level One.

These have both the European time Name (Crotchet, Quaver etc) AND the American Time Name (Quarter Note, Eighth note etc), so you can use whatever terminology you wish. Mums and dads, why not have a nosey around this range of teacher-made KS1 Music Games and Activities? In 1996, the College Entrance Exam Board Service conducted a study on all students taking their SAT exams. Students who sang or played a musical instrument scored 51 points higher on the verbal portionof the test and an average of 39 points higher on math.“ ( reference) Music flashcards Of course you might think to yourself “I can make these cards myself – I just need to find the clipart on the internet and lay them out on my computer” If I had been able to find something like this when I was teaching it would have saved me many hours of frustration trying to learn how to create a good flashcard on the computer, and probably hundreds of hours work.

How can I use this set of flash cards?

Start with 2 - 4 cards, such as bass B and Middle C, and treble MC and D. Mix them up, then ask your student, "Top or bottom? TREBLE or BASS?" (High or low...left or right...) These music flashcard slides are optimized and ready to use during online lessons as digital flashcards through the share screen function on Zoom. If you enjoyed using these music notation flash cards, you may also wish to take a look at some of these resources:

Add bar lines to a large staff - like this display banner version - and ask children to use the Music Note Values Flash Cards to make up the right number of beats for a particular time signature. You might want to print out a few sets of the Cards for this exercise.

Find a Scheme of Work

This classic book is written by Howard B. Richman! An innovative step-by-step sight reading program for musical keyboard players of all levels, from Sound Feelings. The Super Sight Reading Secrets book has provided the answers to sight reading problems for thousands of pianists and keyboardists! These flashcards also make great display posters for your class, you can print these on A3 paper to make them larger and laminate them, so they can be displayed on the wall. These flashcards can also be used to create a fun game with students that is entertaining and educational. I could of course blame their theory teaching, the school system or the parents… but I can’t do that. The student needs to know these things, and it is my responsibility to make sure that they know it. The concept is that you don’t have to print the whole lot – you print what you need. Don’t worry if you aren’t teaching these things – you might one day, and you’re students may well have to know the difference between the sign for an upper or lower mordent.
