This focuses on what Philips identifies as the five pillars of picture quality: colour, contrast, motion, source detection and sharpness. As a fan of the Ambilight system and wanting to have an excellent picture quality, I turned to this screen. With quick cyclic switching between different color tones, an illusion for a new intermediate color tone is created. At the time of writing the sets are running Android TV 10 - but Philips has stated that this will be upgraded to Google TV at some future date.

Information about some of the main accessories included in the standard packaging of the current model. The 55OLED806 is also widely available across Europe for around €1150, but the TP Vision-owned Philips brand doesn’t sell its TVs in the United States. The sharpness holds up almost eerily well, too, when objects are moving around on screen or there's a camera pan to deal with. Yes, it’s a bit monotonal, but let’s not be churlish - most TVs don’t even approach the sort of bass the Philips can deliver. So much so, again, that it's hard to accept that the TV isn't outputting more brightness than it actually is. So while the Vivid mode is still there, for instance, to turn all of Philips' processing tools 'up to 11' for the most explosive results, there's now also a Movie mode which sees Philips turning off pretty much all of its beloved processing to deliver a more 'accurate', neutral image. This allows soundtracks that support the technology to place sounds above and around the listener with compatible kit.

It’s talented where virtually every aspect of picture-making is concerned - and even by the standards of Philips (a TV brand that’s been on something of a roll these past few years), it needs remarkably few excuses made for it. The screen itself sits very close to the feet, which means it’s very low to the surface on which the TV is standing. It's a pity the OLED806 doesn't yet support 4K/120Hz Dolby Vision (Philips is investigating whether this can be fixed). It’s not half-bad by the generally pretty bad standards of Android TV, with a good selection of apps (including Disney+ but not Apple TV) and a layout that’s marginally less infuriating than on previous Android TV interfaces. It's more responsive, more stable, organised more with TV rather than smartphone users in mind, and more customisable.Dolby Vision and Dolby AtmosSupport for Dolby's premium sound and video formats means that the HDR content that you watch will look—and sound—glorious. Even motion-handling, where in the past Philips has tended to overthink things somewhat, can be finessed until it’s confident, smooth and convincing. Information about the available connectivity ports, slots and interfaces such as USB, infrared port, SD card slot, audio/video and network interfaces, etc. Especially since I’ve found that at least some of the features need revisiting fairly often to ensure that the TV is always performing its best.

Sounds are referred to as “audio objects”, of which there can be up to 128 audio channels, and these ‘objects’ can be accurately positioned within a 3D soundscape. Except, that is, for the way it carries both a promisingly large bank of rear-facing speakers and an array of LEDs ranged along all four edges. They’re reversible, so you can either have a bright shiny metal finish on display, or a darker, smokier alternative to suit your decor.millioin colors, which are typical for 8-bit display panels, and not the standard 262200 colors, instead. A TV with a high pixel resolution will have more pixels on screen making images appear sharper and clearer. Every now and then a really extreme bass sound - the sort of thing you feel directors put in deliberately to damage subwoofers - can cause some bass to simply disappear from the mix, or else cause the drivers to collapse into crackling noise.
