Evan through his wills and of course with a little help from his friends (hi Joey, Dog, and Orphan V), get into the high tech ultra guarded mansion and meets this man who becomes his nemesis. The next round of drinks arrived for the ladies—a vomitous concoction sugared up with pink grapefruit, elderflower cordial, soda, and topped with a cherry tomato. As I progressed through the series I became more and more invested in these characters, and this installment plays upon those feelings. I had some trepidation that I may not like reading this novel, rather than listening, as I have all the others. When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar.

Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs.Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. The only time things tend to quieten down is when he’s back in his penthouse apartment/fortress enjoying a ridiculously expensive vodka, feeding his aloe plant, watering his living wall and recharging his batteries on his bed which is suspended in mid-air thanks to powerful earth magnets. So, while Evan is working his assignment for the President, he is also working on a new Nowhere Man assignment.

I enjoy Hurwitz's writing and I am really glad that he didn't try to continue to make the situations Orphan X finds himself in get progressively worse. While Evan agreed to help them, he told them he would do it in his own way without their interference. If you were to go by what you find in novels these days, the entire world is populated by super-trained assassins and spies who can take on any odds no matter how stacked against them the odds are. Taken from an orphanage at twelve, Evan entered a government's covert "Orphan" program trained to kill America's enemies. Evan reconnects briefly with ladylove Mia, enlists the help of Orphan V after a particularly brutal killing, and eventually gets around to avenging Johnny.

In this one, X finds himself in sticky situations, but we are starting to see more reliance on others, slight signs of aging, and introspection on relationships. Gregg Hurwitz has created the most exciting character in modern fiction: Evan Smoak, also known as Orphan X or The Nowhere Man. The President sends a huge special ops team to capture Evan Smoke just so that he can Kill lobbyist, Luke Devine.

Then the government captures him and demands that he stop a sinister, shadowy figure who may ruin a cherished Presidential project. I was offered the opportunity to have an early read and I’m afraid I leapt at the chance, throwing the rule book to one side as I did! This is another great Orphan X novel, filled with dramatic moments, fights, shootouts, and witty writing that we have come to love in this series. As the Australians laughed and pleaded with him, Evan closed his eyes and sampled the specialty Reyka once more.

Unfortunately his love for Mia and Peter lands him in the worst possible situation, and the rest of the book is about how he attempts to get out of it. I think one of the reasons I love this series so much because justice usually wins out in some form eventually. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out. Thus the reappearance of his nemesis, Special Agent in Charge Naomi Templeton, and her tense meeting with President Victoria Donahue-Carr, who has sometimes targeted, sometimes allied with Evan in the past, depending on the circumstances. S. Geological Survey, leading to “immediate suspension of the National Volcano Early Warning System,” and there’s always someone around looking to monetize the natural disaster and the sasquatch-y onslaught that follows.
