Description

The drums make use of Mapex’s SONIClear bearing edges (handed down from its more expensive ranges) to make the tuning range wider and easier to dial in, and SONIClear tom suspension system to help maximise the resonance. The 7-ply, 7.2mm shells are available in a few different set configurations, and there’s a snare drum included with each too. This is by no means a cheap kit. It’s one of the most expensive drum kits you’ll find on the market, but it’s also one of the best 7 piece drum sets you can get. Broadkaster shells are crafted from North American maple/poplar/maple formula that screams vintage vibe and creates tastefully punchy and warm tones for all to enjoy. With a set of clear heads, you can expect to embrace a bright, present top end that’ll cut through the mix, and with a coated set, you’ll be enveloped in warm, vintage thuddiness. I’ve played the Gretsch Catalina Maple drum set many times at my university; in rehearsal studios, in the studio, and on stage. It always delivers fantastic tones. One small gripe is that, as a kit particularly suited to those early stages, a ‘compact’ option would have been great for very young drummers. That said, the two options available are versatile enough for just about any style. Overall, the Yamaha Rydeen feels like a thoughtfully crafted beginner kit. It is an excellent place to begin your journey and, for the price, excellent value for money.

I’ve been able to play dozens of high-end drum sets over the years, but this was definitely one of the best-sounding kits I’ve played. This kit shined in the low to mid ranges, having a strong punchy sound thanks to the DW HVLT shell technology.

Tech Specs

In a nutshell, every time you turn a tension rod with your drum key, you increase or decrease the tension of the head in that spot. For this reason, it’s crucial that you turn each tension rod equally. The drums are made from 7-ply maple shells. These shells have the classic Gretsch tone that sounds vintage, yet modern enough to fit in any band. You get a musical range of notes as you play down the toms. If you’re a Gretsch fan, you’ll have heard the ‘That Great Gretsch Sound’ saying get thrown around. Well, this is the kit that created that sound. You’ll be pleased to know that the bones of the Broadkaster are the same nearly 100 years later, with a few modern touches. The Catalina Club is one of Gretsch’s most affordable and popular kits, and with a slew of beautiful finish options, some seriously cool shell configurations and bags of vintage style, we can’t say we’re too surprised.

Tama drums are another brand which has a rich and interesting history. Made in Japan since the mid-'70s, Tama drums have had a varied catalogue of artists, from Vinnie Paul and Lars Ulrich to Billy Cobham and Peter Erskine. Currently, Tama drums are loved for their punchy and bright tones, thanks to Maple and Birch being commonly used in shells. Whether you’re setting your 7-piece drums in your home or studio, you’ll need to ensure there is more than enough room to accommodate them all. It’s fairly similar to the previous kits. However, it has a few unique features that are exclusive to Tama drums. The Pearl Decade Maple is the current popular intermediate kit from Pearl. While it looks similar to Pearl’s Export kit on the surface, it has a few qualities that make it a better kit with superior tones. One of the best parts of this kit is the snare drum. It has a killer tone as well as a fairly wide tuning range. However, it sounds best when it’s cranked up tightly. The Recording Custom - commonly called the Yamaha 9000 - started life in the mid-1970s with Steve Gadd, amongst many other drum session superstars, swearing by its focused, punchy, pre-EQ’d tone. In 2016, with input from Gadd, the Recording Custom was revitalised, updated with a fatter, weightier lug, thinner bass drum shells, sharper bearing edges and even greater manufacturing precision.

For these prices, you’ll have a larger choice of tonewoods - options like bubinga, walnut and mahogany will start making an appearance, as well as potentially some more exotic choices. You’ll still have your ‘standard’ birch and maple kits at this price point, so no worries if you’re not a wild one. Those woods get used an awful lot - and it’s because they sound killer. The Gretsch Catalina Maple is one of the most popular 7 pc drum sets on the market. It has such a good reputation for being a versatile kit that works well in any style of music. These tones are further aided by the 30-degree bearing edges on each drum. They add a great sense of warmth to the drums along with a punchy impact. The drums are made with 6-ply maple shells. Each one has an impressive low-end tone that tends to work quite well in studio settings. The kit also displays a smooth midrange sound when tuned appropriately.

The first step is to get the bass drum sitting level, and adjusting your stool height so that you’re sat correctly. From here you can start placing your drums and cymbals so that everything is within easy reach, allowing you to hit them without needing to twist or become uncomfortable. The floor tom is 14”x7”, which is quite unusual. While it doesn’t sound bad, some heavier drummers might miss the depth afforded by a traditional 14” or 16”. Secondly, do you have a particular playing style or musical genre in mind? We ask this because different drum kit configurations will be better suited to different styles. What to look for in a beginner drum set If you're mostly practicing and playing in your house and can't make too much noise, then one of the best beginner electronic drum sets may be more appropriate for you. An electronic drum kit doesn't quite feel or sound the same as an acoustic one, but you'll be able to immerse yourself in your playing whilst donning a pair of headphones - and the neighbours won't hear a thing. Alternatively, grab a great acoustic drum set and a set of the best low volume cymbals for the best of both worlds.

The primary goal with Tama’s Star was to enhance shell resonance, making it the ideal choice for both professional drum recording and top-end live work. Tama has opted for vintage-style extra-thin shells with Sound Focus (reinforcing) Rings. It will make your large setup feel more stable and comfortable to play on. It will also allow you to set up more cymbals around the kit without needing several cymbal stands. Most 7-piece drum sets will utilize a lot more cymbals than a traditional 5-piece drum kit, so you might want to think about buying extra cymbals, such as several crash cymbals, as well as effects cymbals such as splash cymbals and china cymbals. DW continues to refine its already awesome Collector's Series. This new hybrid of cherry and mahogany offers a subtle variation of warm, sensitive and concise tones. But if that doesn’t quite float your boat, there are plenty of other custom options to choose from. my son has an electronic kit and has dreamt of having a "proper" acoustic kit. trouble being we had nowhere to put it other than the loft. All the toms and the bass drum have 7-ply maple shells while the snare drum has a 10-ply maple shell. These drums are incredibly punchy. It’s very common to see one of these kits being used in a Gospel setting because of this.
