For an optimal ratio of pushing on the lever, the coffee machine also has a Integrated pressure gaug. It is also a clever way to reduce uneven pressure on the front and back of the o-ring that serves as a piston seal. Not only can the PRO 2 benefit from an additional portafilter or our Second Shot Plus Kit, you’re always welcome to purchase any of our other brewing heads, with an adaptor of course!

The PRO 2 still features our copper-plated portafilter base and is offered in either our premium matte black or our brushed chrome. This disengagement at the end of the pull can be eliminated entirely by watching the pressure gauge to make sure all pressure is released, as I'll show below. in which the water is coming through way too easily, I'm doing a 12-15 seconds preinfusion around 2 bars and then it's hard to reach the desired pressure of around 6-9 bars because there's no resistance, the water flows too easily as I said. With the PRO this is mostly the case, but with substantial pressure there can be some skipping of the piston inside the cylinder. Also, more rarely, if excess pressure is left inside the brew group and the lever is suddenly released, the cylinder can slightly disengage from the portafilter. Each Flair PRO 2 manual espresso maker is also capable of handling various brew ratios from 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1, ensuring that you can extract exactly the espresso you want, right from your home. You'll reduce cylinder separation further by a very light and level tamp followed by a sufficient preinfusion, where you'll see coffee drips slowing a bit and dispersed around the bottom of the cup. Bringing the machine to 6 bars is a bit more of a workout than it was with the signature, and ramping up to 9 bars does require some strength in your arms.

The PRO 2 Brew Head was designed to give the best manual espresso brewing experience that Flair has to offer. To me it feels like I can clean the signature brew chamber a little bit more thorough with just a rinse. This seemed counter intuitive to me, assuming filling the brew head with boiling water and letting sit would absolutely get it hotter than just steam venting from the kettle heating, but Flair maintains the kinetic energy of steam is higher and get the unit hotter. No need to measure water carefully, because I'll preheat the cylinder once or twice before the shot. But, although the Flair packs up beautifully, it’s heavy, and if I’m going to travel, I’m reaching for my Aeropress, it’s lighter, cheaper, easier to use, and more forgiving of lower temperature water. As they lose and regain their grip at the front or back, there is no leakage of coffee above the piston, so I doubt the shot is affected. The Flair Signature PRO is an improvement over the Flair Classic series, although both are capable of making excellent espresso.

As someone that pays close attention to dialing in espresso, this made the task with the Flair extremely challenging: I almost could not adjust one variable at a time, and it was often easy to choke the machine or produce gushers with what felt like only a small window for a good shot in between. Once I'd got over the initial issues with the grind and dosing, I was pulling shots of a very similar level to The Rok, with the same beans. The user experience thread shows some awkwardness with the flat shower screen, which is entirely flat, lacking a center grip to place it over the coffee cake. The PRO dispersion screen sits on top of your ground coffee in your stainless steel portafilter and aids in the equal distribution of brew water through the puck while brewing. My vintage Trosser box grinder works with my Arrarex Caravel lever, but it won't adjust fine enough for the PRO. Flavor separation will be improved by well-aligned grinders, and dialing in the grind will be easier with one that has more adjustment choices within the espresso range. The PRO 2 is also easy to clean, with a patented removable brew head, portable, with a custom carrying case, and covered by a 5-year limited warranty from the manufacturer. So when you have it dialed in, you can make really tasty espresso, and tasty espresso is what we’re after. Another group are hybrid coffee machines that create pressure by boiling water or simply filter coffee.

F/80°C and steeply declines to 153°F/67°C 25 seconds in -- actual pour-in started 10 seconds after Artisan started recording -- and settles into a more gradual decline as the brew water and brew chamber temperatures approximate each other. There’s something really satisfying of having that much control and doing the work on your own, especially if you pull a nice, even shot. This design also means the Flair PRO 2 can pack into an included, precision cut carrying case, meaning you can take your espresso anywhere you’d like. More information will be provided via your personal e-mail address once you've completed your purchase.

And for this, I do love the Flair, it’s directly lowering the high cost barrier to entry with espresso*. Another way all Flair espresso makers differ from traditional machines is the way the portafilter attaches to the cylinder. In addition, home-brewers should consider using a dosing scale to weigh their beans to ensure consistency and to measure output.
