A punch-hole at the top of the screen offers up the selfie camera lens, but it truly takes up the bare minimum of space - it's literally just the lens. As it lacks 5G it's a complete miss for anyone looking for a budget 5G phone, and there are definitely similar offerings that provide that. The textured plastic body means no risk of fingerprints either, so it looks good no matter how long you've been using it for. It might be the somewhat weary feeling of someone who has reviewed phones for more than a decade but there’s not a huge amount to say about the Moto G31 in terms of design and build. Elsewhere, selfies come out fairly well here at least, ensuring this is a camera that's fine if nothing special.

As mentioned in my introduction, the Moto G31’s camera setup is a downgrade on the previous generation, with four lenses replaced by three, and the main sensor dropping from 64MP to 50MP. It’s not new but I particularly like the double karate chop gesture to turn the flash light on and Peek Display means you can long-press on notifications on the lockscreen to preview them. Despite being cheaper than many pairs of wireless earbuds, the G31 offers features like an OLED screen, triple rear cameras and long battery life.

That's once again the case with the Moto G31, which serves up more than you would reasonably expect considering that it's not just cheap, but one of the cheapest phones you can get your hands on right now. It’s almost at the top of the frame and hard to reach – I didn’t use it much at all – but summons the Google Assistant. They protrude a little, but not enough to result in any serious wobble when the phone is placed on its back. inch AMOLED display looks bright and vibrant most of the time, even if it misses out on having a refresh rate any higher than 60Hz. And as you can see, every other phone in the list is faster than both, which isn’t a good position for the newest phone of the bunch to be in.

would be one of the biggest phones around but is very much the norm now – of course better screen-to-body ratios have helped a lot here, stopping phone chassis also getting too big. This mobile phone features ThinkShield security so you can protect your phone's data from malware, phishing, and other threats. The Moto G31 managed nearly a full day of looped video in our standardised test, and while none of the handsets we’re comparing it to is exactly weak on the stamina front, it’s a clear win for the Moto if battery is most important for you. And, if you find yourself running out of space, this phone lets you expand the storage to up to 1 TB. So it's not the most convenient of devices to top up, but at least with such strong battery life, that isn't something you need to do too often. Slow charging, sometimes laggy performance and cameras that can’t cope in low light is actually a pretty small list compared to a phone that cost this much a few years ago. It’s set to four icons wide, but I’d prefer to make it five to fit more but this isn’t an option in the menu. The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the power button on the right of the phone as you look at it – something we're not a huge fan of, but we can live with it.
