I will sometimes, depending on the watch, use a coarse as 400 grit to start - all done by hand and you do need to be careful not to overdo it. What Polywatch (or any other similar product) does is to use a super-fine grit to create enough friction to allow a tiny amount of plastic to melt into the scratches and fill them in. This is mainly due to the position of the watch on the wrist, where it can easily scrape against a wall or other object. According to PolyWatch, when the plastic is ground off, it also ”melts” into the scratches to help remove the scratches.

Polywatch will not work on sapphire or glass crystals as the abrasive material is not able to grind down the glass as it can with plastic.

Synthetic sapphire is often considered to be the more durable option and while sapphire crystals are significantly harder, they can still be scratched and they can also chip and shatter if they receive a strong enough impact. Our number one goal is to make you so satisfied with your purchase that we get the honour of helping you with your next watch purchase. All of the purpose-built tool watches from the golden era of mechanical timepieces were fitted with acrylic crystals and these are the watches that ventured to the bottom of the ocean, the surface of the moon, and everywhere in between.

Instead, both sapphire and acrylic crystals have their own respective lists of strengths and drawbacks, and the “better” option can largely depend on both your personal preferences and how you plan on wearing your watch. Watch owners the world over suffer from this sort of problem, but now PolyWatch, a new type of special-purpose polishing paste, offers them an extraordinarily simple solution. It is not without reason that PolyWatch is the number 1 worldwide when it comes to watch polishes for acrylic glass. The use of a cloth that is both clean and soft is crucial here, since a rough material or a dirty cloth with debris stuck to it may actually run the risk of putting additional scratches on your crystal and ultimately doing more harm than good. One tube of PolyWatch can be used for approximately 10 watch crystals (depending on how much you use and how deep the scratches are). Acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate) is a transparent thermoplastic that offers an inherent amount of flexibility, making acrylic watch crystals less prone to shattering than those made from either mineral glass or sapphire. The benefit of this is that you don’t have to replace your whole watch crystal in case it only has scratches. The product is "Micromesh" I used it during my aviation carreer, it's great at fixing scratches on plexi windscreens which we had on most of the smaller helicopters we operated.

If this is the case, then the scratches you are seeing are not to the coating, but to the sapphire itself. So, even if you have one side coated, the uncoated side will probably negate some of the effects of the coating. To use Polywatch to polish your scratched watch crystal take a cloth (some use a damp cloth, but either works fine).

If your watch has a plastic crystal, it will particularly get hairlines as materials such as your cuff or jacket scratch and rub against the crystal.

However, the classic version of PolyWatch intended for plastic crystals (the one that comes in the small black and white tube) provides noticeable results in just a few minutes, and I consider it to be an absolute must-have for any watch collector who owns a timepiece with an acrylic crystal, let alone a collection of multiple vintage watches. While there are versions of Polywatch that feature diamond paste and were designed to repair scratches on mineral glass and even sapphire, I can tell you from my personal experience that these don’t work nearly as well as the brand’s traditional plastic polishing compound.
