As someone who has a love hate relationship with the night, this book really opened my eyes to some of the wonders that happen at night that we often just don’t think about. This book takes us through the night, from the sky to the animals, to our own sleeping habits. As a result, we end up with this beautifully illustrated, and interestingly written book. Edwards takes us on this journey through night-time with an informal style of writing, woven with facts from science, right through to geography and differing cultures. Even I learnt some new things as I read through it. Did you know that there was such a thing as ‘moonbows’? because I definitely didn’t but now I really want to see one! There is so much in this book and I think that allows for a variety of different ways to explore it. You could take the more factual approach and look more into the facts about night-time and even space. Or, you could investigate more into different celebrations of the night and how different cultures experience and view the night in comparison to your own. You could even look at the book on a deeper level. There seems to be this underlying message that we need to be careful, human’s ever-growing nocturnal nature is contributing more light pollution, meaning animals suffer and their behaviours and survival are impacted. Also, our own use of things such as social media is resulting in us getting less and less sleep which can be detrimental to our own health. The plot was dark, really scary for brief moments and it did feel like it had horror elements. Nevertheless, I made it through and I would definitely like to see where the next book goes. When I first met Shy (that full name...), I was a little leery of his interest. The Eurydice element to the story saved my investment, I liked how that part was rolled out and how they connected but I did want to see more depth with these two though. The whole organisation that Shy and others belonged to was suspect and Roth could be friend or foe; I suspect foe.

This book highlights different interesting aspects about the night time. There is a history of astronomy and an explanation of what makes up the night sky. There are interesting facts about what the sky looks like from different hemispheres and what animals do in different regions. There is also facts about humans' sleep cycle and their night life, as well as holidays that are celebrated at night. There are many random facts found throughout this book.

First you have Anora, who could see ghosts but doesn't know what she is. Then you have Shy who was some creature that can turn from human to a raven. It's all a little strange, but I didn't love or hate either of the main characters. i will say the narrative is a little odd at times. usually with first person POVs, the reader learns things at the same time the MC does. but with the world-building here, the MC is aware of certain things but the reader doesnt find out about it until later, meaning some elements of the plot are a little murky for only the reader until the reveal, which i found to be a bit of a weird choice as makes the beginning a little slow. Would I read it again? Yes I believe I would. Would I recommend this book? Yes I do. However like I always try to do and that is tell parents, Grandparents and Caregivers of young children if you're not sure you want your children reading this book then by all means read it yourself first then make your decision. I liked this book. I really liked the villain(s) of the story. Their characters were multi-faceted and we got a deep look into their wounds. It was easy to understand why they acted the way they did. I did begin to suspect them, so it was a little predictable, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment.
