It appears that he doesn’t really care about her, and Ophelia slowly starts to realize that she may have been brought to this place for another reason entirely. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fiancé to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted.

La Passe-Miroir Series by Christelle Dabos - Goodreads La Passe-Miroir Series by Christelle Dabos - Goodreads

Ophelia is just a girl still and regardless of what she feels she is forced to leave the family that she knows and go to the floating capital of Citaceleste, located on Pole. You are thrown right into the middle of Ophelia's life at the beginning and it is a wild roller coaster ride with all sorts of whimsical, yet somehow lovable characters. In this gripping third volume of the Christelle Dabos’s best-selling saga, Ophelia, the mirror-traveling heroine, finds herself on the ark of Babel guarding a secret that may provide a key both to the past and the future. I’ve read something before with that disparity of feeling like it was written for a young audience but the content was anything but young. We do spend, however, a lot of time in Ophelia's shoes, observing, discovering and appreciating a world building of staggering beauty. I also think this might be a good time for a “list” review, as I feel it might be an easier way to cover all the things I want to talk about.

Those first two novels were subsequently released in English translation by Europa Editions in 2018 [9] and 2019. She reluctantly leaves her home, accompanied by an aunt who will serve as chaperone, and on the journey she attempts to connect with her fiance, Thorn, with little success. Cause and effect is in play, and Ophelia is starting to suspect that she is here and part of a plot that is larger than she could have ever imagined. In 2013, she won the Gallimard-RTL-Télérama prize for first youth novel, for A Winter's Promise, the first volume of her Mirror Visitor quartet. She doesn’t want to get married to him but feels that she has no choice (and in reality she does not, except to leave forever). The books were published in French but have been translated to different languages, including English, so English-speaking readers have a chance to check out this unique fantasy series too. Roseline –A member of the Dragon House and Thorn’s cousin, she is a haughty and disdainful woman who views Ophelia as a threat to her own position. But one character in particular was so loathsome and dangerous, he confesses to Ophelia (and at this point he doesn’t know who she is) that he can hardly wait to “deflower Thorn’s betrothed. For readers of all ages, A Winter’s Promise is a fantastical story of intrigue and suspense that is becoming a worldwide cult phenomenon. Lose yourself in the world of the arks and in the company of an unforgettable character in this French runaway hit by debut author Christelle Dabos.

A WINTER’S PROMISE by Christelle Dabos – Review A WINTER’S PROMISE by Christelle Dabos – Review

She is someone that is blessed with the singular gift of reading objects and finding out their past. They put emphasis on the setting with characters and the plot seeming almost like an afterthought and were essentially reading like a text-only animated movies. According to Ophelia, the “Invisible,” a powerful force in the Arks is responsible for many disappearances and mysterious deaths that have happened throughout the various Arks. At about the 200 page mark I was starting to get worried that I might never finish it, and seeing that I still had 300 pages to go, I finally decided to skim the remainder, something I don’t think I’ve ever done before. There are puns that don't translate exactly the same, but the resulting feeling is the same (in my humble opinion). There are resources that are common to both sets, and some that are designed for younger or older students. I don't know why I've never read much from the steampunk genre (let alone French steampunk, from which this story is translated).
