Description

A Little Luck is the story about the debilitating weight of lies, the messy line between bravery and cowardice, and the tragedies, big and small, that can ripple out from a single decisive event. Potem odcina od siebie matkę, którą uważa za winną rozstania, choć… wcale nikt z rodziny nie dał jej tego do zrozumienia.

In a place she had determined to forget forever, both anticipated encounters and unanticipated revelations show her, and us, that sometimes life is neither fate nor chance: perhaps it’s nothing more than a little luck. Interesting and unlikeable characters (in some aspects) who are well fleshed out and easy to connect to. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The storyline is well-crafted, the characters engaging and the level of detail brings every scene to life. However, as the story went on, meal after meal and cocktail after cocktail, it revealed itself to be a piercingly observant and relatable year-long slice of life, and I found a little soft spot in my heart for each and every single character.

The character development in particular is excellent — we get to know the four members of the Maguire family (warts and all), their family dynamics and relationships with each other (and others). We start with a meal where the parents reveal they’re getting divorced and we end with a meal shared with mother and daughter who are, due to the events they’ve been through, forging a new relationship. When Linda and Gerry Maguire announce their separation after decades of marriage, their thirtysomething children find the news difficult to digest. We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts.

But as the siblings grapple with the pressures of thirtysomething life, their parents struggle to protect the fragile façade of their own relationship, and the secrets they've both been keeping. This is a beautifully written, well paced story of a family, trying their best to cope after a life changing event. This never felt repetitive and often felt like an easter egg when you realised where the "table" was within the chapter. We follow each of the equally flawed characters over the course of the year after the announcement and see how it affects them all. When Linda and Gerry announce their separation after decades of marriage, Nicole and Jamie are stunned. Armed with a key and new knowledge about his parents' past, Nik sets out to unlock the secrets that his mother has been holding onto his whole life.

This British take on the subject has moments of being savvy in family dynamics but far more moments of disliking most of the family, most of the time. The neighborhood looks different too, but she’s still the same woman and it’s still the same place, and as the past erupts into view, they slowly collide.

Each chapter has a meal (or drink, lots of drinks) and Claire Powell's writing and characters are funny and heartbreaking and moreish.
