Description

Nitrifying bacteria are mostly found in sponge filters, fluidized bed filters, undergravel filtration systems, and bio-wheel power filters. Two types of bacteria can grow on ceramic rings ( autotrophic bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria). Every individual bio ball is designed with a bio-sponge inside, which increases surface area and helps filter out additional debris through mechanical means. The media bag can be sealed with a nylon zipper.

Be aware that adding fewer balls than recommended will lead to decreased bio-filtration. And it is definitely not a bad idea to have more bio balls than required — provided that the filter chamber can contain them all. Bio Balls or Ceramic Rings? With bio balls, anaerobic conditions are not created and denitrification is not performed due to the non-porous surface of the plastic and overall spiral designs.Basically, bio balls are small, spherical balls made from plastic. And they contribute significantly to biological filtration by providing enough surface area to house huge populations of nitrifying (beneficial) bacteria. Now, you may be wondering why it takes so long for beneficial bacteria to grow with a new aquarium set up, well, there are several factors to why this happens. Refer to the bulleted list below to see why beneficial bacteria would take time to grow on bio balls and other biological filtrations/media: Bio-Balls: These plastic balls can be found in several sizes and will fit many filter types, especially canisters and HOBs. They provide great surface area and help agitate and aerate the water, making a perfect environment for beneficial bacteria to grow on. While bio balls are effective at filtering water, they can become clogged over time and need to be cleaned regularly. How do you use bio balls? Different types of bio media are available in different shapes and sizes. Make sure to choose a media that is the right size and shape for your filter. If it is too large, it will not fit into the filter and if it is too small, it will not be effective at trapping debris or providing a place for bacteria to grow. It is best to choose one that fits into your aquarium filter the best but also makes it easy for you to clean when necessary. With that being said, if there’s one thing you need to know about turtles, they love to nibble on things. This is why people are reluctant to get sponge filters for their turtle tanks because turtles tend to munch on them.
