Violet Made of Thorns was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022. I was thrilled by the morally-gray-heroine premise, added it immediately after hearing the romance was compared to Jude and Cardan from the Cruel Prince, and Queen Chloe Gong’s personal recommendation never hurt anyone 😌 One of the things that really pleased me was the plot. It was very well thought out from the beginning till almost the end of the book. It surprised me at times too, which was great because I hate predictable plots LOL. The romance between violet- the seer, and Cyrus- the prince was also great and I loved how they hated each other and still had casual endeavours with one another. Entrancing from start to finish." Joan He, New York Times bestselling author of The Ones We're Meant to Find The chances of this book living up to The Cruel Prince were never high, but I'm still a bit disappointed.

The story tells us about an orphan girl with a sight. Violet can see future, she is the oracle, the seer - whatever term you like. In the story she is called a witch. Quite a suitable tittle if you ask me. Violet saved Prince Charming when they were kids and therefore was invited to live in the Palace. She settled inside a tower, exactly like in fairy tales: her personal witchery tower with 200 steps to climb. And when a dreaded curse is awakened it's up to Violet to either save the Prince Charming and the Kingdom or doom them all. The only but of the story is that Violet and Prince Charming can't stand each other. i love me a good feral, morally grey fmc that can barely do her job but is truly breaking the glass ceiling. sis was like "yeah you might die, but i need to get my bag" and honestly? good for her.

Violet herself gave a lot of lip service to being tough and badass and preferring to "run among wolves than be devoured by them" but I'm not sure exactly what she did here outside of dream and get hot for the prince. A darkly enchanting fantasy debut about a morally gray witch, a cursed prince, and a prophecy that ignites their fate-twisted destinies—perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince and Serpent & Dove .

Unfortunately, today is a day of sad news: this was rather underwhelming. Let’s begin with the premise (it’s the publisher’s premise because ✨school✨ feel free to skip the italicized part if you already know it): Dante : ami de Cyrus on l'accusa d'avoir eu des relations avec lui . mais on peut supposer que peut être non . Before we start, how are you all doing? I hope you had a wonderful weekend and got some reading and relaxing done. Ever since this book’s announcement, I’ve been unbelievably excited for it. As more and more information about it came out, I was even more convinced it was perfect for me; after reading it (twice, at the time of writing this review), I can safely say that it was. Gorgeously written, Violet Made of Thorns follows a Seer who sometimes lies about her visions, particularly about the prince whom she hates.violet is one of the best protagonists i have read about till date. she is sharp tongued, unapologetic, very prideful, and somewhat selfish. that is why i loved her so much. i need more books with not-perfect mc's- the ones who aren't a perfect balance, but the ones who have too much of something and too little of another. and it is safe to say i'm a simp for violet lune. Debut author Chen has a winner here, with a rough-around-the-edges protagonist that readers will eventually root for despite her thorns." Booklist I think this was a bit long for a first book, but I think I’m going to read the second one when it comes out. Because I really want to see what happens to Cyrus and Violet next.

I also liked the worldbuilding. This book is reminiscent of a fairytale, one full of fairies and Fates and dragons. Violet is Sighted and able to talk to the Fates; fairies provide glamours for people, increasing their beauty. I also found it interesting that Violet is (East?) Asian-coded in a Western fairytale setting. I think people might think that this book primarily draws from any Asian inspiration because Violet is meant to be Asian. It doesn’t, actually; instead, Violet’s mother emigrated from Yue on the Moon Continent. I really liked this detail because fantasy often likes to pretend that immigration doesn’t exist. Happy Monday and welcome to day 1 of our readalong of Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen. I’m so excited to be reading this one with you, I hope you all love it!
