Matilda's pranks against the escalating shenanigans of her horrid, anti-intellectual parents are hilarious. She makes Crunchem Hall into a makeshift prison, locking children in the “chokey” if they misbehave (a room which is literally a closet filled with sharp nails and no light! While I personally love a book about a child prodigy (especially in the area of telekinesis), I had a different reaction to this book while rereading it as an adult.
