Used to like this programme years ago and bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, I was not disappointed but thought it was a longer series than it actually is. Luke’s illegal activities in establishing a squatter’s ranch allow plenty of opportunity for conflict with the penal colony’s governing body who refuse to recognise his claim to the land. considering it was made in the 70's ( The theme tune is very much of it's time) it is simply outstanding and is almost something that HBO could have made now. It's all tightly directed, including some episodes directed by none other than Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock) and fan favourite Peter Hammond (The Avengers). As they face the struggles of fitting into this strange new world, the family equip themselves with arms and supplies, and set off across the sweltering plains only to strengthen Luke's resolve to become the leader of the land.Luke's father Jason (James Condon) is representative of a more naïve generation who somehow believe that all the righteousness of the empire will follow them into the wild, and he is constantly disappointed that the old guard often turn out to be the most corrupt, Fortunately for him, and the family, Luke is under no such delusion. By episode four, Jason concedes that his son's more brutal view is the right one and he somehow falls in line. Set in Australia in 1829, follow the tale of a family led by a retired naval lieutenant recently widowed who take his two sons Samuel and Luke and his daughter Jassy to New South Wales. Tobias, with his rugged good looks was already on his way to making a career of period-piece dramas having previously starred in Arthur of the Britons, he would follow this series with a guest appearance in Dick Turpin and a starring role in Smuggler.

As quintessentially British as the location for its deceptively simple, but brilliantly effective premise, Fawlty Towers ranks as one of the most consistently hilarious thirty-minutes of comedy to have ever graced the television screen. It's 1829, Jason Firbeck, a retired naval Leiutenant, recently widowed arrives with his family - Samuel, his elder son, Luke, his second son and Jassy his daughter - in NSW, where land granted by influential friends, supposedly awaits him. He displayed a ruthless and decidedly cruel streak and was motivated by just two things – his desire to succeed as a rancher by any means and his quasi-incestuous love for his sister Jassy.

Other regular characters included Moll the innkeeper (Shirley Cameron), Kate Bell (Helen Morse), a former inmate of the notorious Female Factory at Parramatta, and former comic Willie Fennell as a shepherd who the Firbeck family befriends. It was co-produced with Trident Television, the then owners of Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, and aired in 1976 on Nine Network in Australia and ITV in the United Kingdom. Amongst its directors are fan-favourite Peter Hammond ( The Avengers ) and the award-winning Peter Weir ( Picnic at Hanging Rock ).
