Tara was talking to me a bit while she she sat drinking her coffee. One thing she said was “I was going to wear my suede boots today... but then I got the idea to ask you to clean my boots today to try and push Helen into doing something stupid.”

Tara was very animated and happy today, after talking to Jenny, and Helen being pulled into line. I don’t think I’ve seen her so happy before. Tara got me to make her a coffee. Then she did all her paperwork. Before she left, Tara came and chatted to me for a few minutes, just three or four minutes. She told me that Helen still hadn’t given her any sort of apology. Then she went to the reception doorway and, seeing Helen and Lynn at the reception desk, stood facing me and said loudly: “Thanks for cleaning my Nikes! They look nice and clean now!” Tara walked off through reception as she left the centre. Tara said good morning, then said “The carpark was terribly wet this morning. There were puddles everywhere. I think my boots got a bit wet...”, Tara tried to look reluctant then said “Uhhh... I don’t suppose you could wipe them dry before I start work?” It was so obvious that Tara was only asking me to wipe her boots because Helen was standing there. But I said “Ah, yeah, sure” anyway.Tara grimaced, then said “I don’t suppose you would do me a huge favour and clean my boots for me??” Then Tara looked down at her feet and shook her head. Tara said “I walked through the frost on our lawn this morning... just so there would be something to clean off!” Tara was about to say something, probably to insist on cleaning it up herself, but then stopped. Tara grinned and said “Yeah, OK. Thank you.” Then Brian told me that he wanted to organise a ‘Team Building Day’, to bring us all together as a unified team. He said he was thinking about arranging a bus excursion for us all to go to a winery. I started laughing. I couldn’t help it. I placed my left hand under the arch of Tara’s right boot and lifted her foot up off the floor. I started wiping off the drops of rain from the foot of her boot. Friday was Tara’s rostered day off. She usually popped in on her day off, in the morning, to catch up on her paperwork. It had rained heavily overnight, and again there were lots of puddles in our carpark. The sun was out, and I hoped Tara would arrive before the puddles of water dried up. I had just started cleaning the sole of Tara’s boot when she said that. It was a pretty mean thing to say, as Helen’s car was an old bomb. I knew Helen would have been very hurt by that comment.Helen said “Don’t call ME stupid!!!! You DO treat us like scum!! You treat the office staff like we’re shit!! And act all high and mighty!! Tell us to make you coffee!! I wish I HAD made you a coffee that day!... So I could’ve SPAT IN IT!!!!” I had been blotting Tara’s sneakers for much longer than needed, but I was just loving the fact that I was getting to touch Tara’s sneakers and to look directly at them up so close.
