However, given the past several years of experience with smartphones, consumers have generally come to understand that a charger’s listed current determines “how fast it is at charging. So even at its (theoretical) best, though adherence to USB standards ensures that chargers and devices won’t ruin each other, there’s a new consumer challenge of how to determine whether a particular charger will work optimally with a given device.

Some chargers with proprietary fast-charging standards like Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging don’t seem to play nice with the Switch over a USB A-C cable and fallback to a very slow legacy-safe mode where only 5V 0. As you can see from the play times above, making changes to your Switch’s settings can have a big impact on total playtime. My current thought is that USB C has all this charging intelligence, so the Switch should be able to tell the brick what it wants and the brick will supply. Get this great additional charger, together with your previous one, you can either play it at your bedside, or play on tv mode, no need to frequently unplug ac adapter from dock any more.So when the Switch says "I can handle 15V if you've got it", there's every chance that the laptop charger would respond "Sorry, I can offer you 5V or 20V but nothing in between" and they'd settle on 5V which is no more than you'd be getting from the iPad charger anyway. This Nintendo Switch Charger Adapter is small and lightweight, making it an ideal option for gamers who are always on the go.

For if you use it with a power supply that supports less than 2A (like a computer USB port or the Switch Dock’s USB port) you will risk an overcurrent situation which may damage your equipment. It’s significantly above a 10% safety margin of the 15v designated supply and risks burning out the machine. I don't mean to be rude, but I'm kind of surprised that nobody has said that the switch only takes 5 volts and 2.

The end conclusion to my stress test study is that in the most demanding case currently known ( Korok Forest in BOTW), the Switch draws ~8. The downside to joining the USB ecosystem is that it is one standard (group of standards) that needs to support thousands of different devices and their unique power and data needs. The people reverse engineering the dock even suggested that the Switch uses a variation of USB-PD that doesn't meet the official specification. This guide could not have been possible without the significant discussion, input, and feedback of many, particularly PHo, JH, /u/bluaki, /u/deetari, and others.

I am not sure what each voltage is for but I do know that Nintendo have made a branded and licensed Nintendo Switch car charger. I also have a separate addendum article listing the various chargers I’ve measured/tested to reach my conclusions. This long cable is also perfect for those who like to play their Switch in bed, or for anyone who wants to be able to play while their Switch is charging. So I wanted to put this resource together to hopefully shed a little light on this topic for the potentially 2+ million new Nintendo Switch converts to USB-C.

But if I understand the spec correctly, there's nothing in it that forces a charger to implement all the intermediate voltages that USB-C defines support for. The voltage of your USB-PD charger is not quite as important here, as the charger can support 9V, 12V, or 15V (you don’t need to match the Nintendo 15V 2. AC Adapter Power Supply Fast Travel Charging Kit for Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite Support TV Mode Product Details Support TV Mode - This nintendo switch charger supports handheld mode, also works for nintendo switch docking and playing on a TV.

Personally, I only use Nintendo licensed chargers, even though my Apple one is a lot more convenient. Well yes and no, yes 5 volts can charge it BUT the trick is you need a device that can dish out 3 amps of charging juice also! Isn't it possible that the power adapter has 2 different outputs (5/15), because it's so intelligent that it choose what voltage instead you are recharging only the Switch or the Switch and 2 joy-cons? The Nintendo Alt Mode prevents most third-party USB-C to HDMI adapters from working with the Switch, even if they support DP Alt Mode. It is nice just being able to plug shit in and see if it works without having to worry about letting out the magic smoke.
