Description

She is a girl on the brink of adulthood, intelligent and sincere and a little bit selfish, and not without her share of troubles and worry. Omoide "Omoide" is an autobiography where Tsushima created a character named Osamu to use instead of himself to enact his own memories. And when that happened, everyone would say, Oh, if only she had lived a little longer she would have known, if she were a little more grown up she would have figured it out.

She is an eccentric storyteller, given to flights of favor and sudden emotional episodes; her internal mind is indiscreet and creative, however one would realize that as one progresses through the book, focus of the narrator shifts upon the more pressing or ‘actual questions’ about life and her place in it, the questions which really matter in life and the questions which perhaps haunted Dazai too.Now it illuminates the prevalent social structures of a lost time, as well as the struggle of the individual against them--a theme that occupied Dazai's life both personally and professionally. I'm not always a fan of stream-of-conscious storytelling, but Schoolgirl flows naturally and remains engaging throughout the novella.

There is a plea for beauty here, and one to not treat people cruelly for having unfortunate conditions in life.

Tanabe died, but Tsushima lived, rescued by a fishing boat and was charged as an accomplice in Tanabe's death. But even more pathetic is that—to my surprise—the truth could be found in aspects of myself that I don't like. Dazai reaffirms his loyalty to the Japanese Emperor of the time, Emperor Hirohito and his son Akihito. On March 4, 1923, Tsushima's father Gen'emon died from lung cancer, [9] and then a month later in April Tsushima attended Hirosaki High School, [10] followed by entering Hirosaki University's literature department in 1927. Novella which first appeared in the April 1939 issue of Bungakukai; also the title of a collection of stories in which it appears. His wartime works included Udaijin Sanetomo (右大臣実朝, "Minister of the Right Sanetomo", 1943), Tsugaru (1944), Pandora no hako (パンドラの匣, Pandora's Box, 1945–46), and Otogizōshi (お伽草紙, Fairy Tales, 1945) in which he retold a number of old Japanese fairy tales with "vividness and wit. This additional information is not absolutely critical to the understanding and enjoyment of Schoolgirl although it does add some extra depth to the narrative. Essentially the start of Dazai's career, Schoolgirl gained notoriety for its ironic and inventive use of language.
