Description

The book shows us the type of men Lagos women encounter in the dating scene and how it usually ends. So, it is not surprising when a man dates a woman for years, treating her as his one and only, while being secretly married to a woman he respects enough to keep away from his concubine. It is a result of a culture of convoluted traditional ideals desperately seeking to find a place for itself in the global, "Western" cultural scene. Nearly All the Men in Lagos are Mad is a short story collection written by Nigerian author and actress Damilare Kuku.

However, it was an interesting read and made me reflect on the nature of romantic relationships in this society. Could not for the life of me push through this book, way too many sex scenes that are completely unnecessary, random and forced. Lagos of the Mad: Review of Damilare Kuku's Nearly all the Men in Lagos are Mad | Melony Akpoghene".

Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos.

She masterfully skewers societal norms and exposes the ridiculousness lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. This was a quick read (read it in a day, in a few hours) and would highly recommend it if you need a quick read as a transition between two heavy books. Almost two years later, Ugochukwu Ugonna’s ‘Who Drove Nearly All the Men in Lagos Mad’ hits the market. The last time I came this close to a book filled with such enormous amounts of humour was when I read Becoming Nigerian by Elnathan John.

The novel provides a plethora of erotic scenes and the stories are told in different tenses that sometimes get mixed up in the course of the novel.

Even the story featuring gay men follows the same pattern: man and woman fall in 'like' and enter what the woman thinks is a monogamous relationship.
